I own a 1993 super duty (460 engine) I love this truck. The truck without any prior warning signs just started shifting hard through 1 & 2. There was no OD light warning of any problems. The same day I took the truck to my trans shop and they connected it to a code reader and cleared the problem code. The truck again, runs fine and shifts smooth. The trans shop tells me that the converter is slipping (per the code) and within a few weeks or so, I will need a complete rebuild. I find this hard to believe as the truck runs and shifts like before. At this moment I cannot afford the complete rebuild. Is there anything I can do to other than a complete rebuild? Does anyone know what code may have been adjusted or changed? I want to do the right thing, but the $3k rebuild will hurt.
I had a 93 F250, 460, E4OD. Same circumstances. Hard shifting and no indicator lights, could reset the code for a short while before it tripped again. I'm not sure what you're shops definition of a complete rebuild, but I had to drop the tranny and replace the converter and the small paper disc that wears out and causes the slippage. Its a chore, took about 14 hours at home but cost under $400 (including an upgraded shift kit).
It probably didnt do my tranny any good, but I operated for about 6 months just clearing the code with a $30 code reader when it tripped. Eventually it would trip when I had any load attached to the truck and had to do the work.

Thank you for all your effort. I believe your findings match my circumstances. Do you think a home mechanic can do the repairs? Did you need any special tools?
This was the first tranny job I had ever taken part in, and with the assistance of my father (transmission mechanic by trade) it still took us most of the day. I don't recall too many details as far as specialty tools, etc., but the E4OD is no lightweight.
Understand that if you pay 3k for a shop to rebuild it, you'll have over half the value of your truck invested in a rebuilt tranny. Blue book on the truck is just under 5k (I know, just sold my 93 last month).
Try getting a referal from friends or family of a mechanic who does jobs on the side. There are lots of them out there, it's just a matter of finding one who others have be able to rely on for quality work.
Wish I could be more helpful, but being a novice at tranny's, I wouldn't have taken the task on myself without some oversight from a pro.
