You’ve got a point for sure! Working on my 99 is almost like working on a van.
Late model Camaros seem to be the worst, my neighbors late 90s Camaro, the damn thing is 1/2 way behind the firewall
Not to step on any toes but lets keep in mind the 300 was designed in the 60s (and updated in the 80s) so, when you build a 300 you're basically trying to catch up with 40 years of technological advancements without using all of that technology. So much has changed even in the last 20 years. Look at the horsepower/torque ratings of the new pickups vs 1990, especially diesels
I don't think anyone would want to destoke a 300. Cubic inches are power, and I think if you made the 300 flow a lot you could probably still reach 6000 RPM(not that you would want to). After the 4bbl my engine can easily rev to 5000 RPM(I don't do it because the valves float at like 4700 RPM or something like that).
I think if I had a set of headers, and cleaned the head up a lot, it would rev very easily, and with a crazy cam you could probably have a motor that could be confused with a warmed up 302(again not that anyone would want that).
Denbar, I'm glad that truck FINALLY got into the hands of a GOOD owner!
I think all young men should have an old F-150 with the I6 for their first vehicle. The I6 can take some serious abuse from the young'uns! There's a youtube video of some idiot young boy trying to blow a 300. He painted offensive things on the side of the old F-150 and took it in the woods to blow it up.
Any links to this said youtube vid? I'd love to watch it.
The only other one I've seen like this was a Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0L in it. Had 300k miles on it and was rusted out so bad it was officially "totalled". A group of about 5 guys went out and just trashed the thing in the woods. Rolled it, flipped it back over, jumped it, drove it until the rubber on all four wheels was gone and it was rims only (still hauled pretty well in the dirt.) You could see the sun rise and set over the course of the video. Eventually, they gave up just drove it to the junk yard. I6's are tough.
It's funny Bill, my uncle said the same thing to me when he first saw my Bronco. Every young guy needs an old truck to tinker around with. I6s are great for that.
Justin, I'll try to look for you. I probably put it in my favorites on YouTube.
I love the 4.0. I think they are great engines.. they're petty quick. Good low end power also, imho. I wouldn't want one for HD work applications but I bet they would do great in a 1/4 ton truck!

i would prolly trade my 300 for a 240, to get a little better gas mileage

The only problem with this is that I would suck at mechanics if I had my 300 first. Instead of turning wrenches I would have more time to get into trouble. I would have spent less time on FTE back in the day too, and that's no good!
Has anybody seen the British TV show "Top Gear"? They performed a torture test on a Toyota Hilux pickup that I thought was a joke at first, but it turned into the single greatest beat-down a pickup has ever endured, survived, and proven on camera.
The poor test subject got:
-driven down a long flight of stairs
-taken out to sea with the tide, tethered by a chain
-set on fire
-pushed off a 5-story building
After each test, the truck cranked back up and drove around. They had to rescue-saw the roof off after pushing it off the building so the driver could sit in it, but like clockwork, the damn thing started every time. Anybody seen this video? I'll go look for it if there's any interest.

After all of that, they put it on top of a 23 story building, just before the building was imploded. Drug it off the pile of rubble, and drove it back into the studio, where it has a permanent podium as a testament to toyota's quality. Well, their former quality.........
I loved that episode about the Toyota. They even tied it down and let it get flooded by the incoming tide. Some of the tie-downs broke and it washed partially out to sea and got filled with sand. After they pulled it out, they did some minor cleaning on the engine and fired it up and drove it off. The setting it on top of a building before collapsing it was the icing on the cake.
Thanks for the videos Bill, those are pretty sweet. Haven't raced my brother yet. Been wanting to, but I know that my Bronco always bogs off the line no matter what I do, so I'd have to win by catching up. Found out a week or two that my base plate is warped and sucking air, so once that's dealt with, I hope it's a whole different story and race worthy.
Justin, I know all about bogging. If my truck didn't bog down so much she would be a lot smoother in acceleration. What is a base plate?
If your brother does beat you in a race, it's because of his lower gearing. His engine likes to rev and he has the gears for it. Your 300 is in a lot healthier shape than mine though, I really don't have a clue how quick your Bronco is. Have you ever timed yourself to see what your 0- 60 is? My best time was 11 seconds flat.
The base plate's what goes between the body of the carb and the intake and has all the throttle plates in it. I think it's like the throttle body on an EFI.
Since it was warped, every time I'd step on the gas, it sucked air in between the plate and the intake causing a massive lean surge. Blech.
I'll have to do a 0 - 60, now you have me curious.
And yeah, he has the stock 3.5s where I have a 3.0. However, now we both have the same size tires so it should even up the playing field as he has an auto with a 2.79 first and my manual has a 3.25. "Technically" with his auto's 1st vs. my manual's 1st, I should actually be lower geared off the line.
