I have a bad carb on my 78 w/ the 390, stupid question, does anyone know which holley or edelbrock carb i can use to replace the old autolite one? Anyone want to brag about either? Thanks
I've personally have used 600cfm Edelbrock Performer model # 1406 with electric choke and 4-bbl. Thermo-Quad Adapter (.750"). I thought the carb was very good in performance and idling.
"The first one is that they use metering rods to transition between circuits. They are unaffected by engine backfires, which means that there are no power valves to blow out, and the rods can be changed in seconds without carburetor removal or fuel draining. Secondly, they have the unique ability to "hold a tune", so once they're tuned, they stay tuned." as stated in Edelbrock website.

You don't actually have to have the kickdown lever as the transmission will still function without it. I have run for a year without it on my 74F100 and never notice a difference. Of course, I don't street race or anything. My point is that if you already have a carb without the extra kickdown arm and an auto tranny(or vice-versa), you can still use it if you want.
Don't leave off the downshift rod linkage. Even if a few people do it and get what appears to them decent results, that is not confirmation of no transmission operation problems or damage.
Besides, why would you want to risk it when you know the transmission works properly with it?
