Has any of ya had your boots resoled? How much did it cost? Did they do a good job? Iam thinkin of getting my chippewa's resoled. I just wanted your guys opinion.
I have had a pair of redwings resoled twice. It cost about 30-45 and was well worth it. Finally the leather dried out so much I couldn't do anything with it. My fault for not oiling and conditioning them. That one pair lasted me about five years. I would wear them about 15 hours a day 5 days a week.
My guess for a Vibram lug sole is around 50 bucks, may be more. Might want to call around the different shoe/boot repair places in the yellow pages to see if anyone can do it (getting hard to find, I have found out), and then ask for prices, and turnaround time. Quality of repair used to not be an issue on the old style of shoes- don't know if that is still true.
A lot depends on the type of, I think it's called Last, that is used.
The Last is the leather layer between the sole and the leather upper.
The cheaper boots now a days and some of the middle range, use molded lasts, essentially a hot rubber molded one piece sole that is molded or glued on to the upper. This type sole is more expensive to replace since you can't just remove it, it has to be essentially sanded or cut off. Then a new sole is glued in place over what remains of the original sole.
In my opinion the molded sole is a less druable boot in general.
The good boots or traditional soled boots use a leather last. Like I said it is a layer of leather that is between the sole and the leather upper. You can usually tell you have this kind if you can see that the sole and the last is sewn to the upper. The sole may also have nails holding it in place. This type boot can be resoled many times and it usually costs less to do.
I once paid almost the cost of the shoe to resole one with molded sole something like $75.
In my opinion, the boots with the leather sewn on last are usually more durable.
I resoled my Danners 3x on one pair and won't resole this pair, they raised their prices and have standards on how beat up your uppers can be. They won't resole if your uppers are too beat up.
I got a pair of Rocky's that were only like a year old and the bottom fell off the one, had it redone for like 35 for new Vibrams. Then it fell off again, I gotta get em back to the shoe store and complain, cuz the boots are still like brand new, barely broke in.
