Guess what I paid for a gallon of gasoline way back in 1966?
There was a "gas war" going on back then at some local stations....17.9 cents a gallon for "regular" grade Gulf gasoline.
Now...2.57.9 for regular at a local BP station, that used to be an Amaco station that still sells Amaco gasoline, only under a BP name. I assume it's Amaco.....that's what's on the pumps. But who knows with the local oil "crooks" that own them.

Yeah, I remember "price wars" in the Sixties. You would have three or four gas stations on each corner and each was undercutting the other by a penny or two.

When gas prices went up in the early 70s, my husband's opinion was American public would not stand for paying $1 for gas (this when it was 75-85 cents). Well they did and still are "standing for it".

We have regulated our selves into this mess. The "not in my backyard" mentality with refineries and drilling has finally bit us in the back side. There is plenty of oil off the coast of California but the rich yuppies in Santa Barbara dont want to look at the wells off shore. Refineriers have been shut down here in California as well because of small accidents (no injuries and no evironmental damage, just worries about it), and concerns of pollution.

To live the life we are used to living we need to have power plants, refineries, oil wells, & other industry. I wouldn't be happy if a major industrial complex went up in my back yard, but I wouldn't bitch about it if I bought my house right next to one that was already there. I have seen this time and time again. Not just with industry but race tracks and airports. People buy a house right next to one and then bitch about it until it gets shut down.

There are only a few things we can blame on the President. He kept filling the stragic reserves during record high prices. He didn't fight hard enough for expanded discovery and increased capabilities. And finally he didn't do anything to stream line supply. There is no reason to have 17 different blends of fuel. New York shouldnt have its own blend and California shouldnt have its own blend, etc, etc. Come up with a summer blend and a winter blend and everyone use it.

I think right now to combat the prices we are seeing we need to conserve. But I can't conserve by going out and buying a more efficient vehicle. I can't really drive any less. So to conserve, we need to step up to more bio diesel and blended gasoline. E85 would mean an immediate 15% reduction in gasoline usage. A bio-diesel blend that was 80/20 would be a 20% reduction. We are using the same amout of "fuel" but less fossil fuel per gallon. Atleast with diesel we can eventually get away from fossil fuel all together. Bio Diesel is the wave of the future. We can stop farm subsidies because they will be the new "oil" industry.

In the mean time there are lots of things we can do to help lessen the blow. Keep your vehicle tuned up. Drive with a light foot. My V10 is capable of 15mpg but driving normal for me I only get 10mpg. CHANGE YOUR DRIVING STYLE, right there is a 50% increase in fuel economy. The other thing I am going to do is take off my 305/70/16's BFG muds and put back on the stock wheels and tires.

@ keithw: That's one of the points that I bring up. Why so much so fast? It would seem to me that the oil company cartel, and I think that there is one in this country, is leading the market to see what the consumers will pay and then slack off a little, only to repeat the process. They know that auto fuel is cheaper domestically than abroad and it pisses them off. This is the case, make no mistake. The record profits prove it. I bought the Expy not realizing that gas would never again drop to sub $2.00 prices. And another thing- what's with the 9/10 on the price? More market deception to let you think that 2.67 a gallon is 2.66.

None have been built since the 70's, and since then gas demand has went through the roof worldwide. So, if our gas consumption has increased enormoulsy over the years, and we only have the refining capacity to produce a limited amount of gas, then you have a SHORTAGE.

Again, we dont control, or own Iraq's oil...They do, we provide infrastructure and security. We're not stealing it.
dude you have no idea what you are talking about - we can do what we please with their oil... period!

yes, we claim to "only" be protecting it from the "terrorists" but don't fool yourself - we can do what we please with it - just like, if we wanted to, we could put whoever we wanted in power there... oh yeah, we've basically done that already - forgive that oversight!

no, the international community wouldn't look well upon us just taking their oil without compensation, but what we can do now is name our own price for that oil.

but if you don't think we aren't gonna make profits off of some of that oil you are nuts - this is already in the works to help pay for the cost of this war.

so no, there is no oil shortage and no, there really is no really good reason for oil to rise to these levels this quickly - no matter what the demand is! that is the problem everyone has with this... no one really knows how things got this way but i guarantee you this administation played a part in it.

now whether their part was to just sit back, let the task force do their thing and let the rapeage begin, it's yet to become clear enough for the general public to understand. but we do know this president hasn't done his part in letting the oil industry know this kind of price gouging won't be tolerated and that's the problem i have with mr bush and this administration.

yes, we should be somewhere around in between Puerto Rico and Saudi Arabia given we are an oil producing/exporting country AND we've just taken control of that in Iraq... IMO!

Russia is kind of surpising though!
