My Haynes manual says 140W gear oil for manual transmissions and transfer cases. Personally, I run 80/90W in mine and have for over 20 years with now ill effects. Then again I don't pound it off road either. I have in my plans to rebuild both my auto trans and transfer case this winter (200,000+ mi.) and when I do I will go with synthetic lubes in both.
