Hope someone with the same truck or owner's guide can help you out here. I have an older truck with a Borg Warner 1345. It takes Dexron II or Dexron/Mercon ATF. I don't see any problem with synthetic in a transfer case. IMO it's not going to weep any more than conventional lube.
A transfer case is dirt-simple compared to an automatic transmission, or even manual transmission. Heat is not an issue due to no torque converter and there are no sychros. Any ATF will work. Go for it.
I'm going to change the fluid in the tranny with Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. I'll just make sure I get extra for the T-case. I'm guessing this is overkill but, in the words of Carroll Shelby " too much is just enough"
If the xcase calls for ATF, then any ATF can be used that meets the spec. Consider the synthetic ATF as an upgrade.
I prefer slightly thicker MTFs/MTLs in x-cases that use ATF. I feel that the mildly thicker fluid, and the AW/EP additive package(some up to GL4 level), will do better to protect the x-case from wear in stressful environments.
High mileage ATFs, racing ATFs, and Synchromesh are also mildly thicker options.
