I have a 1995 F150 2wd with the 300 six cylinder. I was going to change the power steering fluid since it is the original and very badly burnt and discolored. I know the fluid I need to use, but I was told by several people that I should put a filter in the return line just before the pump. The problem is I can't find a filter anywhere. I tried Checkers, and all the other parts houses around here and nobody has any. So where should I look now?
Autozone has a slip-in that resembles the orifice tube/filter in an A/C system; I'm sure the above described system is much better, but anything is better than nothing.
How many micron is this filter for the power steering and does it restrict oil flow back to the pump? I have a completly new system and only run a magnet.
.....=o&o>.....
I believe NAPA carries WIX brand.
I have no idea what the micron rating is, but all the wore-out systems I have fixed had stuff visible to the naked eye. I did a F-600, mid-70's box for a buddy recently that had an integral filter in the pump. There was a lot of junk inside this old trucks resevoir! (The pump was still fine, the box was slop.)
I stuck one of the auto-zone cheapie's in my return line after changing a pump (again, lots of grey-matter), my thought is replace it in a month. If it clogs and restriction becomes an issue, I don't think it will hurt anything... just time to install a new one.
No, I didn't, I just flushed and cleaned the system as best I could. I expect the boxes and racks make ferrous, I have no idea what material the impellers are.
Power steering pumps are 100% iron inside, any aluminum from the rack is harmless but iron particles will cause damage as well dirt in the system.
I sleep better knowing there's a magnet in the pump. I use NEO steering oil, it lubricates better than ATF.
.....=o&o>.....
That would be NEO synthetic oil, high performance power steering fluid that is a lightweight hydraulic fluid. It was developed to eliminate gear scuffing and flaking in racing power steering units. NEO oil company, signal hill Ca. 90806.
I think it was around $5 a quart before shipping. They ship fast like two days from southern Cali to northern Cali. Hope this helps, Carl.....=o&o>.....
