This is a note of thanks for your highly detailed description of cam and cam gear replacement. I just replaced mine this last week and with your write-up and the added hints of others in this thread, it made the job very easy. Since I don't know anyone around but myself who does wrenching on old Fords, I have to depend on this site for info and encouragement. So detailed accounts such as yours are really appreciated.
An added note for anyone else wanting to replace the cam: After looking at the condition of the bolts holding my bumper, I decided it was easier to remove the two engine support bolts, loosen the two transmission support crossmember bolts and jack up the engine an inch. The cam then slid out with no problem and cleared the bumper without having to drop it.
