Thanks for all the help on my turn signal problem. Now for the big one. The 1979 F-350 7.5 460 I inherited pulls a 26ft Boles Aero Trailer. There is a hydraulic brake system on the trailer (redundant electric system as well) that hooks to the truck system. The plunger connector from the trucks comes out of a hole drilled in the hitch. After a few miles the brake light comes on in the cab and the brakes get real soft. Pumping gives some braking. (Thank heaven for the electrics!)
When not attached to the trailer, the brake light comes on occasionally and they get soft. It comes and goes. I have a new master cylinder and pump. I lose fluid slowly in the forward reservoir. I also lose fluid slowly out of the plunger connector to the trailer. Any thoughts.
With the engine shut off & with your foot pressing on it >
Does the brake pedal in the truck slowly sink to the floor & you don't kind any leaks at any of the wheels ?
If so you need a new master cylinder.
It sounds like you have some crud built up in the quick-release connector. Try this: While wearing gloves, and possibly face protection, use a small screwdriver to depress the ball in the bottom of the connector. Have someone push down on the brake pedal SLOWLY, and when they get to the bottom of the stroke, release the ball. That should push the junk out through the fitting. Also, you should flush and bleed the trailer's brakes, as it sounds like it has either air in it, or a leak. Check the lines underneath, and make sure none are rotted out.
