Replacing Transmission Filter

73 F-250 CrewCab Automatic w/390

I'm not sure which transmission is in this truck. I haven't owned an automatic in years and I have a quesion. I want to change the tranny fluid. Do I just drop the pan? Is there a filter under there? I check my 1967 book and it doesn't mention a filter. Do I need to disconnect the filler tube? Finally, how much juice drains out of these things?
Thanks.

It's probably a C6.

You remove the pan and the filter is in the housing.
To do the job right> Drain the torque convertor too.
You have to remove the inspection plate and turn the convertor until the plug is at the bottom.

NOT SURE : But,It probably takes Type F also.

Replacing Transmission Filter

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Nov-02 AT 12:37 PM (EST)]You will have to drain the fluid first- if you don't have a drain plug, then you will need to slowly back the bolts off on the pan - otherwise you will be showering in tranny fluid (eye protection advised). I assume you are changing fluid in the 1973, not the 1967 - so I would advise you get a 1973 manual - I think they are available through MotorHaven. If not, check your local autoparts store.
There should be a filter. Definately drain the T-convertor as well.
As for the tranny, Dennis is most likely right, but since this question has come up before, I have an image that might help.

Hope this helps.

Went pretty well but what a mess! This old truck has so much grime and gunk on it you wouldn't believe it! Anyhow, the diagram of the pan made it easy to ID it as a C-6. Once we changed the fluid and filter, it shifted better and I'm pretty sure it feels pretty good about itself too. High self esteem. Thanks for your input, guys.

Do yourself a favor and put an external filter in the cooling return line. The Wix unit runs about $16, I don't know about the Ford, but the kits do run on eBay occasionally for about $6-12. The Ford filter looks EXACTLY like the Wix unit.

WIX TRANSMISSION / POWER STEERING FILTER
#51964 OLD NUMBER 1999
#58964 NEW NUMBER 2001
200 PSI WORKING, PRESSURE RELIEVED, MAGNETIC
CHANGE YEARLY OR 12000 MILES

FORD EQUIVALENT FILTER KIT #XC3Z-7B155-AA with connectors etc.
FORD FILTER ALONE #XC3P-7B155-BA

Thanks for using FTE!
