lots more info posted above,and hopefully the meter i purchased works when it arrives lol and will have some personal/hands on experience to add rather just all theory.
anyway.should be enough info gathered to help others with a good starting point and help fine tune them IDI's.
fuel has become way to expensive to let incorrect timing rob us of performance and fuel economy.

"The hardest part was cleaning out the hole (top one on Fords) that the magnetic probe goes into down by the harmonic balancer. Took an hour with a piece of rolled up sand paper to get the rust out."
i take it the crank sensor must have a good clean ground in order to work?
im just getting a pegged single over to past 20* @ BTDC and no tach.
the instructions say in the troublehooting section,that its not reading the crank.
i take it i must shine the holder up in order for it to work?
i hope im right and don't have a bad sensor!!!
otherwise,this very cool and easy!
I'll head back out and start sanding the holder up while i wait for a reply.
thanks.
edit,
not having any luck here.uh oh.
glad i payed with paypal.

good info to keep on hand;
i "think" the 160 and 161 will work in the 6.9/7.3l
they both screw in,and i can see them pulse.
i haven't seen hard evidence yet,nor can i provide it myself yet either.
iv read the 160 cant be used in the 6.2l but it does "appear" either will work for ford idi's.
also another thing to add,if you don't receive instructions.be careful not to over tighten these little guys.only 9 ft lbs!
apparently they can crack if overtightened!!!! be careful!
i simply screwed mine in using a little 1/4 inch drive ratchet until i felt it bottom,and then ever so very gently turned a tiny,tiny bit and called it good.that's all its takes for these.you do this with the engine off of course after the engine has fully warmed up.
another tip to add:
im hoping this is my problem.i cleaned the balancer up good,but didn't clean out the grove.
i want to know where my timing is at so bad,i can taste it lol.

man.i cleaned up the timing groove and still getting a pegged meter.
the instructions say,its possible to have a harmonic balancer with no or insufficient notch to trigger the meter.
mine looks fine though.has anyone run into this before.it can cause the pegged full scale,and no tach symptom im getting.
how did you remedy the problem?
im starting to think iv delt with a dishonest person unfortunately,but i want to be sure i try everything before getting into that mess lol.
what a bummer.i was so looking forward to this too.
i tired using cylinder #4 with the lumy probe and same results.

nothing at all.the meter itself is broke,or the crank sensor is bad.
troubleshooting instructions;
symptom;
timing meter full scales(20* BTDC)
tach does not work
cause;
no magnetic pickup
remedy;
a)push probe into harmonic balencer
b)check connections of mag pickup
c)harmonic balencer has no notch or insufficient notch depth or width
i asked the ebay seller (who does have 100% feedback) about that electrical tape on the crank probe wire.
waiting to hear back.
been hours at this now.hooking it all up and start reading results with a working meter should take like 5 mins max,its that easy.
more time spent letting the engine get up to op temp than anything else.
im sure actually adjusting the ip takes some time too,but hooking up this meter is super simple.
im so bummed.

Boy what a ride this has been. Snapon did make these meters inhouse. They no longer repair them but... This place does. Northern Repiar Center 3011 East route 176 Crystal Lake Ill. 60014. I talked to the guy that is the only person that has repaired these meters for snapon... I forgot his name so. I have so many phone numbers on my desk pad... I think the phone number is 877-777-4412... This real person told me he might be able to repair this. I told him what was going on with the meters and that there is several others experiancing this same issue. So you guys that are closer to Il than I may want to drop a call to this person that feels he can be of some help... Its sure better than the no help I have been getting all over the place.... Finally some lite at the end of the tunnel and its not a train....
