How generic are key fobs? I have a 96 explorer and am looking on Ebay for a keyless fob. There is a large selection to chose from but none are labled specifically for a 96.
Is the programing process dependant on the truck or the fob?
I think there are only a couple of variations that I've seen for Ford fobs. The programming depends on the truck. Most simply require turning the key from off to on a few times in a row, the locks go up and down, and then you press a button on the fob.
I have been wondering the same thing about my 2001, I only got one fob when we bought it and would like another. I have not heard of the putting the key in and unlock and locking it. I have heard that you can get one at a junkyard and take it to a ford dealer and tell them it doesnt work, and they will program it.
When I got the spares for my '03 off of EBay, seem's like there were only 2 different kinds. One type went from around '95 to around '01 or so and the other went from there up. The one's I bought had been used, but worked perfectly. You program the car to the Fobs, and you need to have all of the Fobs when you do it, or you'll have to do it over. Check your owners manual for the programming procedure for your car. If you don't have one, you can download an owner's manual here for a '96 and up. Look around on EBay. Even if you don't buy from there, I found several folks that seem to only deal with Key Fobs, and you can find a fair amount of information about which one's fit which years from the advertisements.
Programmins should be simple, this process works on MOST (but not all) models...
First make sure you have ALL the fobs present as programming will erase all of them.
1> Sit in vehicle, doors closed and unlocked
2> Cycle key ON/OFF 8 times within ten seconds
3> on the 8th key cycle ON, the doors will lock and unlock STOP cycling the key
4> press any button on first FOB - doors will lock and unlock once
5> press any button on second FOB - doors will lock and unlock again
6> continue this for each FOB you have.. they are ALL now programmed. get out of vehicle and test each one
keep in mind that if your sister has a FOB for your vehicle in another state, it will not work now
also keep in mind that if anyone within 200 feet or so happens to push a button on THEIR fob for a different vehicle while you are programming yours, it may now work on your vehicle too!!!
The "add on" door combination button kits you can buy program just like a fob, except instead of hitting any button you have to punch in the combination for it... and ALSO program your FOBS at the same time.
Thanks Guy,
I went to ebay after my last post and found plenty of fobs, and they were cheaper than I expected. Just for kicks I went over to see how much a chrysler fob was for my van and it was double the price.
Thanks
I have a 99 F150 with power locks. I bought it used and it came without the fobs. Does anyone know if the XLT Supercab came with fobs? Or is there a website I can enter my VIN to check for that info?

You can try the procedure mazdaguy mentions up top to see if your locks pop up and down. I sued to have a ranger that I bought used. It didn;t come with the fobs, but the lock went up and down when I did the procedure. So I bought a couple of fobs and programmed them.
I currently have an 01 Explorer that also has powerlocks, but the procedure didn't work as well as another one (that i can't remember) didn't work. suggesting that remote unlock wasn't an option. I eventually had an aftermarket remote unlock installed.
I'm not a hundred percent sure, but I'm guessing that XLT models were standard. Can anyone confirm this? Anwyay, you can jsut try the procedure to see if your locks pop up and down.
Thanks for the help guys. I tried the 8 x on/off procedure, and its a No-GO. Looks like I will keep an eye open for an aftermarket keyless entry systems. Its not a priority, just a convienence thing
This is the procedure for programming that's in my '03 Explorer. Check your owners manual and you'll probably find the correct porcedure for your truck. In my manual it's under the heading; Locks and Security
To reprogram the remote entry
transmitters:
1. Ensure the vehicle is electronically unlocked.
2. Put the key in the ignition.
3. Turn the key from the 1 (LOCK) position to 3 (ON).
4. Cycle eight times rapidly (within 10 seconds) between the 1 (LOCK)
position and 3 (ON). Note: The eighth turn must end in the 3 (ON)
position.
5. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that the programming
mode has been activated.
6. Within 20 seconds press any button on the remote entry transmitter.
Note: If more than 20 seconds have passed you will need to start the
procedure over again.
7. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that this remote entry
transmitter has been programmed.
8. Repeat Step 6 to program each additional remote entry transmitter.
9. Turn the ignition to the 1 (LOCK) position after you have finished
programming all of the remote entry transmitters.
10. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that the programming
mode has been exited.
wow, I'm glad I searched this forum, its answered a lot of questions that I have. One that I can't find though is: my keyless entry pad on my '02 sport explorer. Of course, the manual says that the code to open the door this way is on a wallet card in the glove box - "not!" so the manual goes on to say that the code is also on "marked on the computer module" where would this computer module be located? I've looked in the left rear storage compartment where the jack is, but all I can see there is the seat belt mechanism. where'd they hide it???

Mac.
I had the same problem and called the dealership that made the original sale. Explained my position with the doorlock pad along with a few other questions and in about 3 minutes he gave me the code over the phone.
Does anyone know if you can program the fob to open more than one car? I would think that would be handy if you owned several compatable vehicles to only carry one on your key chain.
Yes, you can program more than one car to a FOB as long as they use the same kind. You actually are programming a computer on the vehicle, not on the FOB. You need to have all of the FOBs you intend to use when you program it, because after you program it, all the ones you had are the only ones that will work.
