New to the Explorer board but not to FTE. This Explorer is for sale near me but I don't know anything about them so I came to the pros. What do you all think?
94 Explorer
4 door
cold a/c
new tires
new trans in 04
new 4x4 actuator
remote starter
135,000 miles
$2000
Should I take a crack at it but go lower because of the miles? How dependable are the 94's? Rough winters here in MI and I need a dependable vehicle. Thanks.
135k Miles not too bad for a 94. My 91 engine went 230K before rebuild. Was still running good, but using some oil, so I decided to rebuild and run it another 5 years or so. The early 4.0 engines are nearly bullit proof if maintained in any reasonable fashion. The main items of concern (auto-Transmission and 4X4 shifter) have already been overhauled, so barring any other normal wear type items, sounds like a reasonable deal.

Was the trans professionally rebuilt, and does he/she have paperwork on it? I'd also check the radius arm bushings and for rust in the rear qtrs and wheel wells. Make sure the 4x4 works.
Up there in MI I suppose you have problems with rust so I'd check that for sure (we don't have that problem here in South California). If it has leather interior and is in good condition overall I'd buy it in an instant with that few miles and a rebuilt transmission, expecially if the trans is still under warranty. My 2 Explorers have 197K and 272K miles on them so I don't consider 135K a lot of miles. The trans is the biggy but that will probably last another 150K miles or so if you are nice to it.
Pull a hose from the vacum tree too. If it's wet the transmission modulator might be bad. I doubt it if the trans is only a year old, but check it anyway. The RA bushings are another good thing to check. Also take a good flashlight and take a look at the timing cover and intake manifold for signs of leaks.
