when I am hauling my camper and boat pulling a hill I hear this sound. kind of like pressure being let off in rapid bursts. my search of this site has led me to believe that this is not good. Ive got a 99 350 with the banks chip, exhaust and trans controller. is this problem correctable with the wicked wheel?
I had same problem after chip, cold air ind. and 4" exhaust. Made loud swooshing noise when let off after hard acceleration or if accelerate after 65-70 mph with heavy trailer. It was turbo surge and the wicked wheel completely cured it. It sound like a mini jet under load. It works great.

I agree with your diagnosis, and yes, the wheel will fix it.
Do you have a boost gauge? That will tell you how urgent fixing it is.
Wicked Wheel will fix it, so will the ATS vented compressor housing.
The wheel is a cheap fix but requires lots of labor if you do it off the truck. The housing is expensive but can be installed on the truck and is a fairly easy installation compared to the off truck Wheel intall.
I installed a ATS turbo housing has a 4" inlet . This took care of all the flutter . My truck has a 4" exh, chip, K&N cold air . I think this will help you.
I concur on the Wicked Wheel. Your symtoms exactly match mine and the new wheel completly cured it. The intake sound went from sounding like Darth Vador suffocating to a nice strong turbo whistle/whine.
I don't know why none of this site's sponsors carry one, I would post a link!
I bought mine from www.dieselinnovations.com. They call it the "swisher wheel". Or you can do an Ebay search for "wicked wheel". Bankspower.com also has it under another name. They're all the same thing, just different branding. Pick one that makes you happy and buy it.
You'll have to copy and paste that link above or you'll end up at Motorhaven.
I bought mine at dieselsite.com for $70.00. The swisher wheel at dieselinnovations is the same thing, different name I think. I believe is around $80.00
Are these wheels different sizes - depending on the saize of of your turbo / housing? or is it a one size fits all proposition. Forget who it was now ... but there's larger than stock turbo options and this guy had one. 80 vs. 88 or something like that. So my question is - would the larger turbo w/ bigger diam breathing tubes - also cure the surge issue?
Id prefer to get the bigger housing and compressor wheel - and the wheel be a wicked/swisher/banks wheel.
All the "wicked wheels" are 80mm. If you want to get a bigger wheel, then you have to buy the turbo that comes with it. And that's a good thing, just a lot more $$$. EGT's go way down, flutter goes away, bragging rights are improved. The housing tolerances are so close that you can't get a credit card in between the wheel and the housing.
