1999 1/2 7.3 f 350 crewcab 4x4 with banks stinger kit. this is my first diesel truck. have owned it for a month and a half. about once per week when I'm warming it up in the morning the idle starts surging. according to the tach the rpms are running up and down about 50 rpms. this truck has 81000 miles. no idea of the services performed in the past. I have heard alot about the cps. could this be tha problem? no check engine light has come on. if I go out to the truck and rev it up when it is doing this, it will stop. any help would be great.
Mine would do it on really cold mornings, I ask the shop and they said something about a sensor being cold.......Only does it once in a great while. 02 7.3 47K
I think mine does something similiar to what your truck does. Randomly my idle will fall to about 500 RPM or so and it sounds like its going to stall. It never does stall but the noice sounds terrible and it seems like its ready to. I havent figured out whats wrong though. If I do, ill let you know.
My truck will surge at idle when I first start it, but only if it has over 5K miles on the oil. Change the oil and it quits. Go figure...
Could your truck be surging because the A/C compressor is running? It will run in A/C mode or defrost mode.
my 97 does the same thing.... i have replaced Fuel filter, CPS, oil to rotilla T 15-40, cleaned FPR screen and it's still happens. Not sure what it is... maby fan clutch or the a/c clutch is about to go?? (it does it even with the AC off)
Does it do it when it is warm? I know mine doesn't and the mechanic said not to worry about it. Does it happen after you start right after it idles up?
mine does it all the time, warm motor or not.... hasn't affected any of the truck's pref. so i don't think it's an issue... maby the fan clutch or AC clutch... or maby i should have the PCM reflashed... i don't know but it soesn't really bother me to much... also checked the fuel pressure which was up to par also...

Robb - My truck does the exact same thing. It doesnt really bother me either and it doesnt have an affect on the trucks preformance so I havent spent a whole lot of time trying to resolve the problem.
Guys, you might see if some of the fuel system cleaner ran through a tank or two of fuel double strenght might help clean the injectors and the rest of the fuel system, if your already sure of the fuel filter.
There is quite a few of us here that run the fuel additive all the time too, that helps as well. I have seen mine do this slightly, when I have both stacked chips on a high setting when I first fire her up on a cold morning. The PSD would load up with the extra fuel and get to caming over for a lack of a better word for what the chugging of the extra fuel LOL.
I like to treat my fuel system with a double dose of the fuel system cleaner every so often, while doing this I will flip my chip to a high setting and put the other on its highest setting and go run the hound out of her on a good open stretch of road. The run out like that will have lots of fuel ran through the injectors and really clean things up good. Might be all you need, just make sure of a good clean fuel filter as well as good clean air filter. Not sure if this might help you or not, just know it sure helps my 95 MY PSD

Thanks... Yea I run Power Service in my truck year round... i have been running the white bottle because it's could out.... but i'm about to switch over to the gray bottle.... maby that will help some.... thanks again...
the truck only does it on cold mornings and only on initial startup. it sounds like a dog ruffing. here goes, shhhhhhhhhhhhhhoooooomph. hows that? It does this over and over until I go out and touch the throttle. then it quits.
Hey guys the romp-romp-romp you hear in the mornings on cold starts is the elec. fuel pump not fully priming. When you go to start the truck you not only have to wait for the wait to start light to go out but listen for the fuel pump to stop priming. stand outside the truck between the bed and cab on the drivers side and you can hear it running. Once it is fully pressurized it stops running and you can start the truck- no romping. Takes about an extra 5-10 seconds.
