oil filter discussion

ok, i just did my own little look at a cut open fram and i cut open my wix filter.... when i got inside the fram i wanted to to shoot someone, it has cardboard on the tops and bottoms! what does cardboard do when wet?!?!

when i got my wix cut i was happy with what i saw and thought, hell i could leave this baby on for another 3000, but no i wont

here are some pics i found on the net of some cut open filters...

http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/images/filters2.gif

and here is a study on them

http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/oil_filter_study/

m,y conclusion is the same he made, any of these 3 filters work nicely but i would really have to say that if a 9$ wix filter is too much, just remember how much a new engine or an engine rebuild is....

Matt

p.s. post thoughts please

ya, I liked that read on oil filters.
I saw it awhile back on a jeep forum.

Since then I have been looking for a Mobli1 oil filter & I cannot find them ANYWHERE???!!!

For those who use them or know where to find them- help me out please- Where can I find one?

Thanks

Try Autozone & O'Reilly Auto Parts. They both carry Mobil 1 oil filters. They usually have them on a top shelf.

By the way, I use M1 filters & absolutely love them. Two thumbs up for the M1 filters.

Filters use paper elements. What does paper do when wet? By your theory all filters should collaspe. Maybe those Fram endcaps are something other than cardboard?

I have been using Purolator filters for many years based on tests like these. I guess I may stick with them for awhile.

fram uses cardboard, try cutting a used filter open, its soppy wet and i really think that would be hella easy to blow threw... also the blow by valve is so easy to press i dont know that 1 pound of pressure wouldnt open it

Thumbs down

I would not install a fram filter of any kind on any vehicle. Fram is and will always be trash. Purolator Purone, Wix, or Mobil1. Just my two cents worth.

It has happend to a couple of posters on BITOG.

Now that Walmart is carring MC once again for the same price as a Fram (most cases), why not choose the better designed filter?

We sell the 51515 for $2.61, and the 51372 for $2.96.

Fram has always used cardboard - why do you think those filters are so cheap? Substandard.

Do companies that make oil filters have to meet a spec like oil vendors do? If so where does one find these specs.
