Spent a couple hours reading the SCMT thread. But I still have a question. Just traded off my 2003 Dodge Dsl auto with 4.10 rear end that had an edge EZ and guages for a new 05 F250 powerstoke auto with 3.73. Prior to this truck I had an 01 f250 7.3 auto with 3.73 with HTPP3 with banks big head and guages. I pull a 8X24 gooseneck horse trailer. With both of the previous trucks I never ever had a problem with HIGH EGT and had to back out. Neither truck gave me any problems or ever had to go in for repairs. My question is if I install a SCMT and load the "tow" program and I tow my trailer the same way I did with my other two trucks, do I need to install a pyro.
I have read most every thread on the SCMT and EGT and many folks don't have a problem with EGT's on any setting as long as you are prudent with the go pedal. That being said, my next driveway project will be guages.
Many who know much more than I on this subject will chime in soon. Hopefully, Choctaw Bob will respond. I remember that he runs the SCMT with no aftermarket exhaust and rarely sees high EGT's.
I will tell you always have the gauges...but I like monitoring the engine for more then just standing on the throttle......it is VERY cheap insurance...even without a tuner.
Actually, before he traded his truck, Choctaw Bob ran with Predator and K/N air intake. No exhaust mods. Made his own gage pod BTW which looked pretty good. He had no problems w/EGTs and ran pretty ding dang hard.
My truck has a stock intake and exhaust and I run the SCMT. When towing my ~10,000 lb toyhauler I put it in the tow safe mode and generally have never had a problem.
I have the X-Monitor guage package that shows boost, tranny, and EGT, and also saves the max values hit you reset them later. Even pulling up 8% or more grades I generally see the EGT climb to the high 1000s or low to mid 1100s and hold there. The max I've ever seen was 1263.
You could perhaps get buy without a guage, but they're really nice to have.
Any time you tow with a diesel you should have a set of guages even if it was stock. Maybe Ford will put them on there for us in '07 (I hope). I agree with Tim that it is cheap insurance to have. I run the edge Attitude and I would be lost without the guages (digital in this case). I tow from 6000-10000 lbs and I am always checking boost and EGT's even though they never reach dangerous levels. If you have them you will learn what you can and can't do and you would be amazed how much you use them. I suggest you ask anyone that has guages if they would ever run without them. Every one would tell you NEVER!!!!!!!

Thanks
You do not need a pyro.
However, I recommend that anyone have a pyro, even with a stock truck.
With the tow program and the dyno loaded so much the truck couldn't out pull it (dual eddy-currents), the EGT never went over 1150-1200, even after sustaining this type of load (wot, peak torque range, max boost, held steady by the dyno) for at least two minutes.
