Unhappy 92 F-150 Tranny

Hi I have a 1992 F-150 std. cab 8ft. bed truck with a 4.9L I-6, a 5-speed tranny, and 4WD. The transmission syncro took a crap and now I have no 1st and 3rd gear I took it to a transmission shop and they said that they could rebuild it for around $1500. I was wondering what type of tranny is in this thing and also could a T5 transmission be installed and still work the same because I can get a brand new T5 for around $1000. If anybody can help its greatly appreciated.

Its a Mazda M5 OD trans. You can get one for about the same price as a T5.

so im guessing that the T5 and the Mazda M5 are completley different and you can substitute a T5 for a M5 because of weight loads being put on by the torque of the motor correct?

Honestly, I don't think a T5 would hold up any better than the Mazda unit. I don't know what kind of mods you would have to do to make a T5 fit. I'm pretty sure it would bolt up, but I'm not sure where the shifter would sit or what kind of changes you would need to do to the crossmember and driveshaft.

Are you looking to put a better/stronger trans in? If so, check out the ZF trans from the 3/4 and 1 ton pick ups. Practically indestructible. Still requires a crossmember and driveshaft shortening, but it'll hold up better than any T5.

well the trans is going up because the syncro has already gone and now I only have 2nd,4th,5th, and Reverse. The quote i recieved was they could rebuild it for around $1600, and Ive seen T5 reasonably priced for less than that. I was just wondering if the tranny in the truck was either a T5 or similar because I figured it would be cheaper to get a brand new trans for less than a rebuilt one. but thatks for all the info. and also where could I find either a M5 or a tranny from the 1/2 ton brand new or rebuilt and are they cheaper than the quote I recieved.

I bought a remanufactured Mazda M5OD about 2 years ago for around $900 from an online dealer. Check out Ebay see if they have anything. Probably find the best price there. I bought it from a place called All Trans (online). Almost 25k later and still no complaints.
