I was wondering if there is any fairly simple way to tell if my engine is a 351c or a 351m. I got the truck from my uncle, who has always been told that it was a 351c. Its a 79 f150 4X4 Custom short bed. Only one other person owned it before my uncle got it, but dont know if he may have switched the engine.Any help would be great.
Also, does anyone have a battery hold down, stock, for a 79? Thanks!!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Dec-02 AT 11:12 AM (EST)]does your block bellhousing look like a 460 or a 302?
if its a small bolt pattern its a 351c. if its a big one its either a 351m or 400 and they would be normal for your truck. also look at the engine mounts if they look like a 302 engine mount its a 351c, the 351m and 400 are unique. one other place to look is near the distributer under it if there is a web sticking up its a m motor. another way to tell the 351c is about an inch or so narrower and shorter than a 351m or 400. I hope this helps.
dont know on a battery hold down, I made my own out of flatstock that I bent to fit the battery.
>you can tell by valve cover bolts i think. the c has 6 and
>the m has 8. correct me if im wrong
the 351c and 351m and 400 all have the same style valve cover
the heads vary in combustion chamber size and valve size and port size depending on year and what engine but the covers will interchange as do the heads themself.
the only other 351 ford makes the 351w is just like a 302 when it comes to the valve cover.
I "stole" this quote from an earlier post by Franklin2. I think it explains how to tell the difference quite well

351c also has 8 bolts for the valve cover, and is only a possibility if it was swapped in. The 351m and 351c are related and very hard to tell apart. If you look at the block where the dist sits, on a 351c this surface of the block will be level with the front gasket of the intake manifold. If it's a 351m, the front intake manifold gasket will be above the surface of the dist flange by a casting ledge. This is because the 351m is a little taller than the 351c, but both use the same dist.
if it still has the emissions sticker check to see what year it says on it. if it says 77' or later its a Modified for sure. the cleveland was done in like 74'.
oh yeah i foregot, on the corner of the head where the valve cover mates up, on the driver side, on the intake side there should be a 2 or 4 for the clevo. stating either 2bbl or 4bbl heads. for the Modified it should have nothing or a M. i'm pretty all the older M's didn't have anything on them. i think the M was put on during the 80's. i have only seen one like that and it was an 81' ton truck
sorry if that was confusing
