My 78 F150 has a 351m that was attached to a factory 4speed manual with granny low it used to be a utility truck. I'm going to put a c4 in the truck for now until I get a c6. Will the c4 hold up to normal driving ? I won't be hot rodding it. I'm useing this until I get a fmx c6 from my uncle. thanx for any info!
Ya I just found that out today when putting the torq converter on. The guy I got it from said it would work! guess not. this is my first truck so sometimes I'm missinformed by people who think they know whats going on.
But shouldn't a Fmx c6 work for it? any thing but the low ratio 4 speed tranny that was in it, couldn't imagine going down the highway with that !
Goin' down the highway with either is going to be about the same as they both have the same final (high) gear ratio... 1:1
The granny low 4 speed gives you that extra low ratio for when you need it to get out of a jam. Usually you drive it like a three speed.
With the automatic you also have some torque converter slippage.

ok so the c6 would be best for my truck which I'm building for street and strip? also would the gas milege be different with the c6 over the 4speed? Finally my uncle who has the c6 also has a set of headers from a 351 Cleveland he says the headers might fit on my 351m.
If you really want to run a C4 behind a 351M/400, look in 77-79 tbirds/cougars. They had the C4 in certain ones. Supposedly the C4 robs less horsepower than the C6. The clevland headers will bolt up to the motor, but probably will not clear the body/frame. Mileage probably will be worse with the automatic.

You have changed from normal street driving to racing. A C6 can be built with extra bearings etc. Check with TCI or Jet to see if they have an AOD tranny conversion that will work or even some other trans. If you are fixing your truck up for racing you probably are expecting to $pend $ome big $$$$. A lot of research and knowledge will be required. You might want to spend some time at the track watching the big boys run and check out what it takes. It sounds like you have a LOT to learn yet.
Thanks again guys for the info And I will only race it at my local track with some of my buddys nothin serious though. I'm just trying to build the truck to hang with the newer cars and trucks my freinds have built. And smoke a few rice rockets. Most of the parts on the truck have been givin to me or I got for free just want to see if they will work that's all.
