turn on the wipers and at first they would die halfway through thier motion.
doesn't even do that anymore.
now it just makes a buzzing noise, like a motor trying to move but being held back.
can move wipers manually, so I don't think they or the motor is stuck.
question:
do you think it's the wiper switch or the motor?
all connections are ok, I popped open the motor and it doesn't look like the gears are hung up or worn.
well pulled some of the dash and undid the switch.
after cleaning the terminals and whatnot, the wipers work again. Only thing is they do not go back down automatically.
you pretty much have to wait for them to be at the bottom of thier travel before you shut them off.
isn't there another switch that controls this? (aside from the dashswitch)
If you have the interimnent wipers, you have a black electrical wiper relay box bolted to the dash under the wiper switch.
Every time you release the emergency brakes it slams up aganist the stops and shakes the dash and the box very hard. After a while of this sudden slamming, the electrical connections in the box start to come unsolded.
I have taken mine apart and resoldered the connections once already. That was several years ago, now it needs it again. The wipers will ususlly work on high, but stop whenever they want on low. Sometimes they will stop, other times they will moan and move slow. I guess a solder job in in the near future again.
Mine is an 87, and the wiper thing is fairly common if you use the e-brake a lot.
that sounds possible.
my 88 f150 never had any of these problems, but I owned it for a good part of it's life, and never used the ebrake.
this f250 diesel I just recently bought and so I'm not certain if the ebrake was used alot.
the 88 f250 had a recall for defective wiper switch/delay controller. mine was done in 89 after it did what you are describing, and not a problem since.

Yardbird, thanks for your experience. I changed the wiper switch ($30 at AutoZone) on my 89 F150 but that was not the problem; apparently it is the relay box you told us about which Ford has on sale one-time-only, first-come-first-served, for merely $150. Guess I'll try out my soldering skills, so what if I totally kill the box it doesn't work anyway.
