torque converter lock up mod

Ok boys,

So I give a buddy of mine a CPS spare to carry in his truck. Because we are friends, I did not expect any repayment etc. Well he gets this torque converter lock up kit from SPdiesel. He has apparently decided he has no use for it and wants to give it to me. I really do not know anything about the mod and would like some info. Did a search and found tons of talk aboutit sounds cool, don't leave it locked up under 30 mph, not in first gear, the tranny is already locked in o/d, etc. But really what are the benefits from this mod? Anything I should avoid? Do I really need it? I see that it helps with towing I tow a 35ft 5er, but how does it really help with towing? Need the info give it to me.

The CPS is the real culprit in this saga. If your loaded and are going down an incline like might be the case in the mountains lets say. In a bone stock transmission, if you down shift for said incline....you want to use the engine as a brake to help you control the truck and load. Well the CPS is with you on this endevor until you get her down around 30 MPH. At that time.....the CPS says we must be going to stop, so unlock the TC to make it a smooth stop. Now you really don't want that to happen going down a hill. So you tell the tranny to stay locked up until you say to unlock. That's a rough idea on how it works. Now the nice thing about the Super Duty....is that you can mod the hell out of them as you well know. If you couple your new found friend with the EBP sensor mod; so you now have an exhaust brake to go along with it. Then you have some very good stopping equipment to go along with your truck and trailer brakes. Hope this helps. You've got a good friend....be sure to thank him.

That is a pretty decent explination. But still wondering why I need it? I haven't had any issues towing so I am just wondering what it will improve?

It improves your braking abilities. So you don't have to use the service brakes except in extream cases on downhill grades. Once your service brakes get hot....they start to fade, and smoke.....then you loose control.....can't stop.....and end up in one of those emergency escape sidings.

Maybe I am just not getting it. I down shift prior to starting a steep decent, and haven't had any issues. The only reason I am really curious is I obviously like modding the truck but the tranny I am a little leary of just because I really know nothing about them. I do not want to damage or cause premature failure of the tranny. If the mod will really benefit me and even help the tranny I am interested if not, I will leave it be.

Does this mod aide in pulling at all up hill or on flat surfaces. Here again I have had no issues but, anytime you can improve towing it is a good thing esp when pulling steep or long grades. Thanks for your help T of G

No....as far as helping on the pulling side.....the CPS has that covered. It is just another tool to assist in control on down grades when loaded.

I use mine all the time in town, stop light driving, where you slow down to about 20 mph but never really stop, I like it alot better, truck feels smoother, the TC would never lock below 35 or so, so the engine was always revving way up, then idle, rev up, idle. with it locked, it is just like a manuel. ya fallow me on this???

I also use it for slow speed towing also, where I am only in 2nd gear, but the rpm's are up. lock it to keep tranny temp down. a locked converter makes alot less heat them an unlocked one.

same as TOG said, down hill, lock it, OD off. can go down 9% grades empty and never touch the brakes.

its also fun to lock it at 10 MPH and stand on it. watch the smoke roll.

I believe you are referring to the CPM. The CPS is the triggering gizzy for the crankshaft and firing the injectors.

AAAA.....sorry.....please correct to read PCM in all of the above posts. Thanks. I sure don't want to confuse anybody. In the begining, we used to call them "EECs" short for Electronic Engine Control......then Ford changed it to the more spiffy name of Powertrain Control Module
