I have a 2000 Excursion LTD 7.3. Went to use the AC this weekend and nothing. Clutch on the compressor never engages. I called the stealership and they want to charge $90/hour for "diagonostic" work to figure out the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I should start before writing the dealership a blank check?
Thanks in advance for all the help!
Sounds to me like you are low on refrigerant. There is a low pressure cut off switch that keeps it from engaging if the freon is low. It also has a high pressure switch that does the same thing if the pressure gets too high. Try this to try and rule out clutch failure first though. With the engine running and a/c on tap the front of the clutch with a small hammer or other hard tool. It may be that dust or debris is keeping it from pulling in. Check your fuses and make sure you have a good connection at the plug on the clutch. A little free trouble-shooting may save ya BIG bucks.

Ok... tried tapping the clutch.. nothing. Checked all fuses and the connection to the clutch and all seems to be good. I even tried to bypass the low pressure switch to the see if the clutch would engage, still got nothing. Can anyone tell me how the vaccum pump effects A/C operation? Could I have a problem there?
