When mine says 0 miles it means 0. I have kept a 5g jug. Mine hit 0 twice and with a mile started to hesitate. My lite comes on pretty consistantly at the same time each tank. Depending on how many hwy/city miles I put on that tank.

I bought into the "Lie-O-Meter" talk as well. Then I drove until my meter read '0' and I had to idle to a fuel station about a mile away.
I believe that I'll be paying more attention to the Trip Computer from now on. When it shows 'Fuel Low', off to fill up I go!
Concerning original question concerning differing fill-up volumes, I have noticed that angle that rig sits when filling is most often culprit.
After 27K miles, I have found that my Lie-O-Meter is anything but a liar.
I get a chuckle every post I read that refers to it as such...I must have got a good flow sensor in mine. When it says 0 miles to empty, it is on fumes.
My rig gets 15.5 -16.5 around town and 18.5 to 19.5 at Interstate speeds (70.... +/- 5) SCMT tune is good for 1-1.5 MPG city and highway.
My offshore rig has Mercury Optimax engines. They have an integrated flow sensor|miles til empty type of thing also. If the engine management screens says you have burned 100 gallons, you have burned 100 gallons. That system is amazingly accurate. But like the engineer says, it must be a diesel thing with the Lie-O-Meter...
