My new PSD has a small oil leak that is coming from what I think is the power steering pump. The pump is on the driver's side and low on the engine (visible from under the truck). The oil/fluid is seeping from around a "pipe" plug in the housing; the plug takes what appears to be a 7/16" allen-head driver. Since the dealer is 90 miles away, I'm going to try to tighten the plug myself. Has anyone had experience with this problem? Thanks.
After thinking more about this, I think the belt-driven pump I was looking at was mounted to the engine with a gasket. Doesn't sound like a power steering pump, huh? Any diesel mechanics out there? The part that has the pipe plug that's leaking oil is above the drag links on the driver's side of the engine.
I have the leak from the allen head on the oil pressure regulator but thats more toward the passenger side. The leak is the front main seal but I haven't had it changed yet.
I had my power steering gear box replaced at 600 miles. It was leaking red fluid at the left front corner of the truck. It was leaking fluid on the steering parts then onto the ground. It was a several hundred dollar part, so it was worth taking to the dealer. They had my truck for 4 days though. Each day I was told, the parts should be here tomorrow..... Only when I called the service manager did it get fixed.
Red fluid? Mine looks more like engine oil. The service manager put a truck on the rack to verify the part I described is the power steering pump and I have an appointment in a couple days for it to be replaced. It doesn't make me too happy to have this part replaced in less than 1000 miles, but I really have no option. Also, I'll be paying the price for buying from a dealer that's 90 miles away; however, this is the fourth truck I've bought from this dealer and the first time I've gotten a bad one that caused me to take it back for service.
I'll try to keep a positive attitude about this F350, but it's difficult to do. I had transmission problems within the first 60 miles (bad torque converter solenoid), and now the power steering pump.
The engines oil pump is right behind the lower crank shaft pulleys.. The power steering pump is located on the left side/lower portion of the block. Its 'directly' attached to the block and doweled for alignment, but no gasket.. If you look straight up 'dead' center/front of the block and this is the 'allen' plug you see weeping, it the engine oil pump pressure relief plug..

I posted pictures of the area where the leak is occurring (see "hi-jacker's SD" in Galleries). I'd appreciate any detail info on the remedy for the leak. Thanks.
Could be a front crank/pump seal leaking, or could be just the allen plug weeping.. Or even the oil pump cover/housing.. Worst case would be the engine front cover.. But, almost looks like its leaking up higher (and mostly on the crank seal side of the front cover) and on down in the pics, but hard to tell.. Can you use some spray parts wash or brake clean and get it dry, then drive it a few miles and see if you can determine the leaks origin.. If its the crank seal then the pulley/damper has to be removed and a new seal installed.. Either way, not a huge issue but a nuisance for sure.. Front cover would be a bit more labor intensive but is probably just one of the lesser leaks..
Buy the way.. There is a allen plug on the back of the PS pump just behind the inlet for the low pressure/return hose.. The pumps aren't serviced, and are replaced as a unit.. Especially for warranty purposes.. Good pics!

Thanks, Hayapower. Actually, I had wiped off the oil before I decided to take the pictures, but it definitely appears to be beading from under the head of the allen bolt. The truck goes to the dealer tomorrow, so we'll see. Thanks again.
I have the same leak. 03 CC4x4 37000 miles. No drips to the ground but is on front drag link. I have not tried tightening the alan nut but am watching it. Kinda wierd but I call it a "seep" until I see oil on the ground (I park in the same place everynight). Rear main has been leaking since day one but still does not drip on the ground either. Will be taking it in for the rear main after my 3000 mile trip to Colorado next week - didn't want em tearing into it prior to leaving for long trip. other than this the truck has been awesome.
Thats the same leak I have as I mentioned earlier, the drip just hangs off the hex head on the oil pressure regualtor ,theres quite a few 05s that have that. Most likley its the front main. Looks like its the oil pressure regulator head buts its turning out to be the front main. Ive got dye in mine now, just waiting till I get it back in to get the seal replaced.
The dealer fixed mine today...front main seal was leaking and sending a drop of oil onto the head of that allen head plug/pressure regulator. Before even looking at it, the service manager and the mechanic were both certain it was the seal as they've had this problem a lot. Thanks for all the input.
