DEF warning not resetting

I purchased a 2011 F350 with the 6.7 with 65000 miles on it about a couple of months ago. I have put about 3000 miles on it so far about 600 of those pulling a 30' 5th wheel. Today my 800 mile DEF warning came on so I picked up a 2.5 gallon jug and it took all of it. The last little bit went really slow so I figured it was full. I had some running around to do and the warning did not reset after about 15 miles and 3 start and stops on the engine. I read that they really need to be topped off completely do I grabbed another 2.5 gallon jug and was able to get about another gallon in. I then drove it for about 10 more miles stooping and starting 2 more times. The warning has still not gone away. Do I just need to wait a little longer or is this an indication of something I need to be worried about?

It only happened to me once when I drove 200 miles after the warning. One jug wasn't enough to reset the warning, but part of a second jug did the job after driving it a while.

You should have let it get down to about 200 miles to empty.

Then you should get the ford filler for the def and keep it. Use it and you will not spill and you will not over fill either.

At around 200 to empty (or a bit less) it will almost take two 2.5 jugs.

Your system is now confused. Best thing I think at this point is to add more and see if that will then register full. I believe you did not add enough to register at the next sensor.

Thanks for the replies.

I will get a filler from my local Dealer.

The warning finally cleared itself after I pulled into my work lot this morning. The next time I will let it go down a bit more before I top it off.

Thanks for the help.

DEF

Tank holds 5 gallons. I fill it when is say 1/2 full to keep it easy. But if you want to take it that low your going to need two jugs to fill it. People have issues with the system not reseeding unless it filled to full. Choose your poison.

Question

Computer DEF display read under 1/2 but okay. Topped up DEF tank with just under 2 1/2 gallons yesterday. System did not reset till today after about 5 starts and 100 miles. This is the first time it happens to this truck with 19,000 miles.

I wonder if the DEF fluid doesn't crystallize on the sensors once it gets low. Then after you fill the tank again it takes a little time for those deposits to redissolve into the new def fluid. That would explain why it takes a while for the warnings to reset.

Good question.

I tend to think not.

I have shut my truck down, filled the def, then drive off and the warning was gone.

I had the same issue one time. I posted here and my post read almost exactly like yours. I thought it would never clear the warning. Now, I do as others said. I wait until it gets to the 200 mile warning. Then I go to a truck stop that has DEF pumps. That way, you can fill without over filling and only buy what you need. And...it's usually cheaper to buy it that way than in the jugs.

Between me and the dealer (when they did my free oil change) about 5 gallons of def had been added to my truck for the first 10k miles. At that time the 500 mile warning came on I was heading out on a 5k mile trip, so I filled it - took 4-4.5 gal, and it was definitely full. 3.5k into the trip (2.5k empty, 1k towing an 8k# TT) the 500 mile warning came on. I didn't want to have a partial jug to kick around, so I dumped in a 2.5 gal jug. The warning was gone when I fired it up. (For those curios about the Torque Pro app, it had dropped to ~0.5 gal indicated when the warning came on. It read 3.1 gal when I filled it, and, this time, 2.5 gal added also indicates 3.1, so I guess the computer thinks the tank is full. :-))

Not sure how your system works? My system lets me know that I'm at a half a tank and below. I know how sticklers around here for exact information so the next time it comes up I'll take a picture it flashes for a brief second letting you know you're at half a tank or under I believe it says don't hold me to court on that one, don't want to start another argument. As I stated earlier my mechanic agrees it's not good to let it get dry in the summer time forming crystals inside they had to clean a few out from people letting them run low I'll keep mine full every 3000 Miles like clockwork so far at 16000 miles in 4 months do to my high mileage learn to do a lot of things different when driving that much everyday take care
