The first time I got this warning, my 2005 PSD took 33 gallons, which seemed about right. Last time the warning lit, it only took 27 gallons. Any idea what is going on?
Roadie,
If I am not mistaken, the low fuel light is based on the distance left to go at the current MPG your truck is getting. So the first ime you could have been on the highway and the next time you were in town or something summilar to that. All based on the "Lie-o-Meter".
I don't think it's that complicated that it calculates any MPG and range. Probably just an electronic limit switch of sorts (a circuit tied into the fuel gage signal that alarms when the fuel gage sensor gets to a certain point). In my truck, I don't have a lie-o-meter and I get the warning.
I would think that on trucks with the Lie-o-meter that it my have something to do with it.. The Lie-o-meter is tied into the Miles to empty and Maby the Miles to empty is somehow tied into the Low fuel Light?
But then again like stated above maby on trucks equiped with the Nifty Lie-o-meter the light is triggerd in the same manner as trucks that are not equiped.. Its just triggerd by the needle Position?
Ive never ran my truck to low fuel so i couldnt help, Ill top off at about 1/4 tank or before. I dont ever notice any difference because im the **** Type.. I fuel up at the same truck stop every time, Same pump (to aid in calcluation of mileage)..
I have run my truck nearly out of fuel, I have put 34.5 gallons in once, and 35 gals in another time. The low fuel indicator seems to come on about the 29-30 gal mark.
After I Harpood the Tank. It takes about 30 gal after the fuel light comes on. Leaveing about 4 gal left and at 15 mpg avg. your not going to go to far, I think I'd like run out of fuel.
I have put 30 gallons in my 29 gallon tank ten miles after the low fuel light has came on. did this twice to be sure. Do these fiiler necks hold thatmuch ? this is based on adding 5 gallons after pump clicks off the first time.Truck is a cc sb.My old long bed seamed to have around 7 gallons left when the light came on ,this one im really not sure.
When mine says 0 miles it means 0. I have kept a 5g jug. Mine hit 0 twice and with a mile started to hesitate. My lite comes on pretty consistantly at the same time each tank. Depending on how many hwy/city miles I put on that tank.
As an off-roed equipment engineer (mechanical engineering specializing in diesel and hydraulics) diesel is much more responsive to volume changes based on temperature. So what you have left depends on the ambient temp. Another thing to note is that the "lie-o-meter" is not as inacurate as you think. Diesel fuel can fluctuate 12-15% based on temperature, the reading you are getting is actual fuel volume passed through the injectors, not how much you put in the tank.
05 F-Series/Excursion Inaccurate Fuel Level on Low Mileage Trucks:
Some trucks may have an inaccuarte fuel level indicated by the gauge at low miles. This may be due to being transported to the dealership at an angle. It may take driving for up to half a tank of fuel to correct. The gauge may self correct if the batteries are disconnected for a minute, then reconnected, or leaving the key on (engine off) for 15 minutes with the truck parked on a level surface. Could be an issue if you park on an extreme angle?
You must be really proud of your engineering degree. I happen to have read five of your posts and four mention your engineering degree. Those engineering degrees are pretty hard to get, so I kinda see your point.
In any event, nice to have you on board. I can't think of a better bunch of knowledge to have on the 6.0 forum (unless you worked for International, I guess).
Actually, funny you mention that, i had a job offer for NAV/INTERNATIONAL in Melrose Park Il. but couldnt stand the thought of living so close to chicago, and the pay wasnt as good as some other offers.
