I need to program a third key that I have cut. I've read that you can do it yourself, so long as you have two working keys already. I've searched the heck out of this forum and haven't found any directions. Can anyone tell me exactly how to do it? Thanks!!
What year is your ranger? I jsut did one for my 01 Explorer, and I did one for my Ranger a while back, and it was the same. You stick in the first programmed key and turn it to "On". Leave it in for a couple of seconds. You take it out and and stick in the second programmed key and turn it to "On". Leave it in for a couple of seconds. Then you take that one out and stick in the third unprogrammed key and turn it to "On". If it works, the Theft light will go out. If it starts blinking quickly then it didn't work. (I think its in your manual somewhere)
I just went through the hassle of getting a third one cut for a 99 Mercury Mystique, and the procedure was in the owners manual. We only had one key for the car (bought it used), so went to a dealer, who had to screw around for quite a while and try about 3 times to make it work. It all cost $100 (CDN) for two key blanks ($40CDN each) and the programming.
I'm glad my 94 Ranger doesn't have the PATS. Bye the way, how much are the blank keys with the transponders in them in the US?
How long ago what this and who did you buy them from. I have a O1 ranger. and i want the right keys for the thing. Cause i keep locking them in the silly thing
Just so you guys know, you can go to you local locksmith and they have the non-transponder blanks. I got one for my truck and it does everything but start it which is good because if somebody finds it for some reason they can't steal my truck. Also for you guys like me that have the factory bed lid, then i would definately get a hide a key since the only way to get into the bed if you lock your keys in it is to have another key made or go home and get your spare.
The proceedure to program the "Securi-Lock" key on my 99, is located on page 68 in the owners manual, under the "Controls & Features" section.
First you need TWO pre programmed keys.
1: Insert the first key & turn to "Run" (but don't start the engine), for at least 1 second.
2: Turn the ignition "Off", remove the first key & within 5 seconds insert the second key, turn to "On" for at least 1 second, but not more than 5 seconds.
3: Turn the ignition "Off", remove the second key & within 10 seconds insert the new key to be programmed & turn to "Run" for at least 1 second. This will program the new key.
If you were successful, it should start your engine. If not, repeat steps 1 through 3.
If that isn't successful, then perhaps it's time to see your Dealer or Locksmith.
BTW, owners mauals are available in PDF format, for downloading on the MotorCraft website.
Often times they can be found at no cost at salvage yards in the glove box.
You guys seem to know a lot...so here's a question...
Can I program the same key for 2 different vehicles? Then I could just get a regular non-PATS key cut, and leave it in the ignition of each truck all the time, then just carry the PATS key in my shirt pocket, (or sow it into my hat!) so the truck would only start when I'm in it, and I wouldn't ever need to use a key! Oh yeah, I could unlock the door by using the touchpad code.
Would be kind of cool to never have to carry keys.....right?
Don't think so, first there are some differences between keys and year of vehicles. You might be luck enought that a key could be programmed into both vehicles. After making the tumblers the same you need to have the key close enoguh to the "loop antenna" in the steering column. It has to be pretty close and I don't think it can read it from more then a couple inches away.

The PATS key has to be very close to the ignition to work. I've read elsewhere that people secured the one PATS key they had under the dash and then used their non-PATS to operate the vehicle. Not sure how true that is though.
When I purchased my 02, it only came with one key since it was used. My dealer was kind enough to cut a new key and program it free of charge. All I had to do was buy a remote for the alarm, ebay, for 15 bucks. Programming of that is simple.
Sounds logical....but how about this? Used to be that only one side of the key was in use at any time, that is, you could just cut one side of the key, then always use that side up (or down). If that's still the case, we could get a key cup with two different cuts, one for each truck, then program the key into both trucks. Thus, one key would work for both trucks, just turn it over! Think it would work?
I don't think one side will work in the new locks, but you could have the one of the vehicles locks keyed the same as the other one at any locksmith. Then have the key programed into both systems and off you go with one key that fits all. IF in fact the vehicles use the same type of patts key.
