Correct oil pan?

Correct oil pan?
On my 72 F250 Crew (2WD, 390), the oil pan drain plug is right above the front crossmember. When changing the oil, you have to put something under the drain plug to redirect the oil over andaround the crossmember, or you have a big mess.
Is this the way Ford designed them? Or is this perhaps the wrong oil pan?
