Just a quick question, I have a '73 F350 Super Camper Special, has the 390 and c6 trans. Is it just me or did the engineers screw up putting the oil pan drain plug directly over a cross member. The 2 oil changes I've done on this truck are incredibly messy since the oil hits the crossmember and splatters all over. I'm trying to clean up the underside of the truck but it seems impossible

Yup, One of Ford's "better ideas"... one of those idiosyncrasies with FEs in these 2WD trucks. If you think that's a pain, you ought to try to change the engine oil of a Ferrari 360.
One option is to install a Fumoto valve and hose (Google it). The other is to use a piece of cardboard folded in a "V" to serve as a channel for the draining oil.
