Ok, i realize that this makes me sound like a freaking idiot, but how do i change my own oil when the drain plug for my oil pan is directly over my front crossmember?
Makes a mess. I made a small chute out of a 1 1/2" metal stud track for the oil to run in past the cross member into the drain pan. Also when you take off the oil filter (390 fe) it drips all over the place, as it is mounted horizontally. Never could figure out why they didn't mount it vertically. Then you could:
1) change it without the mess
2) partially fill it when changing to make the oil pressure come up faster
3) not need a filter with an anti-drain feature. (Started checking for that after I did my first oil change and the oil pressure took a long time (seconds) to come up every time I started it after sitting overnight.)
I could be mistaken, but I believe there is an oil filter relocation kit for FE engines that orients the oil filter vertically instead of horizontally. Not sure if it's a Ford part or aftermarket. I'm also not sure if there is clearance for it's use on a bumpside. I would love to hear from anyone else who knows what the real deal is. I hate the mess!!
Thanks,
Gene

Certain Fords (early Econoline vans, I believe, as well as 2.8/2.9 V6 Rangers) had this adapter. It's also available aftermarket as a Ford Racing part, M-6880-A50, right angle oil filter adapter:
Of course, you can swivel it to orient the filter however you like.
These tend to be a bit on the pricey side, about 72 bucks from Jegs and Summit racing. My '89 Ranger 2.9 V6 came with one stock and those are easy to find in the wrecking yards, so if you really want one, that's where I'd source it from.
You can also use a after market kit and relocate on the firewall or fender walls. I do this myself and have the Oil cooler added and a marine expander oil tank, holds 1 gal of extra oil and really helps increasing the oils life.
FE engines in cars had the vertical mounted oil filter if I remember correctly. Not sure if there is a clearance issue in the pickups. Look for one at the salvage yard out of a FE equipped car???
