I am putting my motor together and i have all of my rings sized to each piston. My only thing is the compression rings. I know how the oil rings go together. but which compression ring goes where. one set of 8 is marked with a green mark and the other with kind of a pink mark. (i have not been smart enough to put a mike to them to check for a difference in thickness, and the thickness of the groove in the piston, but i am at work and the thought just popped into my head that they might be different. I really want to try get those things in this afternoon if all goes well.
This might be stupid to ask but i have never done this before. The gap in the rings. I know that you are supposed to stager them about 1 1/4" from the front of the piston on the compression rings. and about the same except on the back of the piston for the oil rings.
My thing is would it be better is you put that gap 180 degress away from the other gap so that they will be on complete oposite side to each other?
would that hurt anything or cause problems?
i have got how to build big block fords by steve christ and that has been very helpful. This was just a crazy thought that popped into my head to help decrease blowby

where the gap is placed. I know if all the gaps a inline that it willl cause alot of blowby. and that they are supposed to be about 1 1/4" out of line form each other.
So to reduce even more blowby why not put the at 180 degress away from each other?
I put my compression rings 180 degrees apart, and the oil ring 90 degrees away from each. The compression rings hold the compression, so the opening should be as far apart as possible. However, they should work fine as long as their not lined up.
THIS IS JUST A THOUGHT...... i KNOW THAT YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO PUT ASSEMBLY LUBE ON THE RINGS BECAUSE THEY WILL NOT SEAT RIGHT. tHE THOUGHT THAT I HAD WAS ABOUT PUTTING ASSEMBLY LUB ON THE CONECTING ROD BUSHING AND PISTON PINS. iS THAT A BAD IDEA OR IS OIL BETTER TO USE?
oil or lube is fine, for years we built engines only using oil, I don't remeber when the first time I saw assembly lube...we never had cam lube either...
