i have a 96 f150 4x4 302 5-speed. currently has auto hubs. is there an advantage to manual locking hubs over auto? i do mostly road driving, go muddin about once every 2-3 weeks.
several.... manuals are a LOT, a LOT, less likely to malfunction. and they dont create as much drag. the autos engage and disengage a lot of times by themselves due to differing terrains and speeds.
i would highly recommend it and i would also highly recommend the milemarkers. they seem to blow the warn hubs out of the water, esp the 35 spline stuff!
There's nothin worse than gettin right in the middle of the nasty and findin your autohubs ain't locking in. At least with the manuals you ain't guessin about it.
I've seen a handful of early 80's-90's broncos, pickups, and rangers break the autohubs with just the stock tires!
Manual hubs solved the problem for my freinds ranger on 35's. And I think he also said that ONE replacement auto hub costs as much as a SET of a manual hubs. He got warns as they were the only ones readily available at the time.
And if you do convert them to manual, you need to have a certain type of spindle nut lock or the spindle nuts will work themselves loose. The hubs you buy will tell you which ones to get if you need them. At least that was the case for the ranger, the broncos and F-150s might be different.
