I'm getting use to theses auto hubs on my 87 f-150, never had auto hubs before, but always a memmory challange to remember if the hubs are in or out. Like backing out of a parking stall and being aware that you just unlocked your hubs. question I have is, what would happen if you pulled it into 4 wheel drive on the fly and the hubs weren't locked in. I had an instant where I wanted to put it in 4 wheel on the hwy and had to pull over -stop - pull it into 4 wheel- then go again, cause I couldn't remember if the hubs were in or out. so I'm wondering if I accidently pulled it into 4 wheel on the fly and the hubs were not locked in. what kind of damage that would do $$$
I don't understand the question. If you have auto hubs why would you need to check to see if they were locked in? There is a speed that one should not exceed when locking into 4 wheel. But other wise the front shaft would just spin if the hubs were not locked.
bare with me here. from what I gather(please correct me if I'm wrong) but the auto hubs I have are not locked in all the time. You have to pull it in 4 wheel at a stand still roll ahead then the auto hubs then lock in. but if you take it out of 4 wheel, the hubs themselfves are still locked in, until you move the vehicle in the opposite direction out of 4 wheel then the hubs unlock. so I'm wondering if I unlocked them(beeing unaware I did) then was driving and pulled it into 4 wheel with the hubs unlocked, if the hubs would try to lock in at hwy speed and explode. I understand that principle on manual hubs, but was uncertain exactly how theses auto hubs work
I understand what your asking now. If you are locking the 4x4 in at or below the recommended speed then you will be fine. Above that I am not sure what could go wrong but I can only it couldn't be good.
The auto hubs actually become unlocked when you cycle from reverse to Drive, or vice versa. So even if your going 50mph once you shift to 4H They SHOULD lock-in, but if they are dirty they may not. These are usually recommended cleaning once yearly for best results. Just tear them down dip them into ATF and reinstall, grease is not so good for these, it keeps them in good shape but for real use, the ATF will keep the working the best.
witdog, just so I understand you right. if the hubs were not locked in, you could engage the transfer case into 4 wheel drive at 50 mph, and the front hubs at that speed would lock themselfves in without damaging anything? hum interesting. for some reason I would be scared to try that. thanks for the ATF tip. I've taken manual hubs apart several times, but not to sure about auto hubs, are they much different, any tips I should know? thanks for replying
