Sealing off engine compartment

Well after a few run ins with some deep mud holes I found out that my half rotted inner fenders just weren't doing thier job. I really don't want to replace them so I am wondering what would be the best way to seal off the gap they have left behind? I have seen some use canvas and/or rubber but don't know which would be best. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Conveyor belt material. Rubber, thick, and tuff. Or, go the the nearest speed shop and get some of that plastic they use for fenders and such and use that.

Swather canvass is what i used (check my gallery out of my bogger), if you get the stuff with ribs in it it becomes farely easy to form too.

Best way to attach the stuff is with self tapping screws or lags.

I am using sheet metal about 18ga., but have seen mudflaps from semi trucks big inner tubes cut up, and whatever the only thing I don't like about canvas is it soaks up water, and holds it against the metal it's attached to causing even more rust.

Good point about the waterasboration there rob, but in my case its something i don't worry about as the mud i tend to play in will rust the truck out faster then the water will.
