I own a 1994 F250 4WD pickup with power steering. My pump moans every so often and the sector shaft seal started to leak. So I changed the sector shaft seal and bled the system of air. Within 3 minutes of it running the new seal and snap ring blew out of the steering box. My next move was to replace the ever so often moaning steering pump thinking that the bypass valve was sticking causing extreme pressure build up. Lo and behold the sector shaft seal again blew out of the box. I noticed that there is no o-ring groove in the box to keep this ring in place. So I tried one more time using two snap rings to hold the seal in place. Once again the rings and seals blew out of the box. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My hunch if correct is that there is a blockage somewhere.
A good question! If there is no grouve for the snap ring why did the original seal not blow out?
The original seal started leaking. It didn't blow out until I changed the sector shaft seal. I pulled the sector shaft completely out of the unit to make it easier to remove the seals. I cleaned out the lower end and did not see a groove for the snap ring. Could it have rotted away? This truck was used for plowing and we use a lot of salt up here. This morning I put the seals back in and added two spacers between the 2 snap rings and pitman arm. The rings are slightly loose when the arm is tight on the sector shaft. This will keep the seals from blowing out again until I figure out what is wrong with the unit or replace it. The new power steering pump was slightly moaning today in light moans. I priced a rebuilt steering box for $155.00 this afternoon. I think this may be the best way out before I damage the new pump.
Sorry for delay in reply but have computer problems. I think there should be a grouve for the snap ring. I replaced the seals in the steering box of my `87 F250 4x4 about 18 months ago and I think the snapring grouve was machined in the housing part. Have a look. I would think you have a good price for a new box and rather than spend more time on the old one maybe you should go for it. You could always repair the old one and keep it in case.
I'm sure there is , or was a groove at one time. It is about 1/2" in the sector shaft bore of the housing. The parts go in as follows ( from the inside working out...) roller bearing- main seal ( 3591) SNAP RING ( internal style) then dust seal. Are you sure they are in that order?
i'VE NOT SEEN ANY WITH A WASHER, BUT THE OUTER DUST SEAL IS RIGID AND SLIGHTLY RESEMBLES A WASHER( EXCEPT FOR THE RUBBER LIP).MAKE SURE THE LIP IS POINTING IN ON THE FIRST (MAIN ) SEAL, AND OUT ON THE WIPER ( DUST SHIELD), AND THAT THE SNAP RING IS BETWEEN THEM.
my truck just simply moans all the time. everyone that rides in my truck always says "you need more power steering fluid" but it shows full. and on top of that, i thought maybe it had a leak or something but the fluid i use supposedly closes leaks. so does anyone know what the problem is?? it annoys the hell out of me and i don't know how to fix it.
