Recently purchased a 1992 F150 with a bad transmission.
Took the truck to the transmission shop and had it rebuilt.
At 35mph you can feel the converter locking and unlocking.
You either have to slow down or pickup speed to make it quit.
It feels like it is shifting between gears and can't find one it likes.
If you turn off the overdrive it quits doing it.
Took it back to the shop and they have had it for 2 weeks and can't fiqure it out.
did they do all the updates??? if not find a better shop! a bad T/C solinoid will cause this.
plus its not a good idea to ride around in OD at 35mph...turn it off

I took it to the transmission shop and paid $1200.00 to have it done right.
I guess they did the updates I paid them to completely rebuild it. {Find a better shop} I paid one now I am suppose to pay two shops. I don't believe that ford intended that people have to turn off there overdrive to drive thru town but maybe I missed that in the owners manual
35 mph or there about is where the TC locks up. and yes when you are driving in city traffic/ town the OD should be off. that was the problem in the '80's with the AOD, but most people did'nt read the warning that was in the owners manual. of course a 2.73 with .68 OD was'nt a good idea any way. (stupid engineering) but yes when driving in city traffic it is recommended that you turn the OD off. my E4OD has over 200,000 in my '92 dually stock! a friend has a '92 F250 diesel with 250,000 miles and it still goes from FLA. to ME. I routinely turn it off when driving thru a town that has 35 mph speed limits or it'll will do the same. the only way to fix this is to get the computer reprogrammed and ther are chips to do this...
So I guess I just need to get the truck back from the shop since they obviously don't know much about electronic transmissions. They said they replaced the Torque converter, trans computer module, oil pump. bands, and not sure what else.
They thought the ECM was bad and was going to replace it but when they pulled it out noticed that it already had a rebuilt one in it so decided it probably wasn't bad. I checked for trouble codes before I took it back in and figured if the ECM was bad it should have come up with something.
Will it damage the transmission if I drive it like this. Don't go 35 or turn off OD
yup..., you'll be rebuilding it again in another 75,000 or so...
its is a well known fact that ford did some really bad programming from the factory.
i really hate the fact that my '97 tbird goes into OD between 30/ 35mph, and the truck is the same way. it should go into OD at no less than 45. my bird has a chip and it seems to have helped i have 114,000 and no problems...but it still goes into OD between 30/ 35mph and with a 3.27 rear, at least the truck has a 4.10
Well I called the shop to pick up the truck and take it somewhere else and the man said they were out test driving it. I called back later and the owner said he sent ECM off and had it tested and they said it was bad and he would have to order a new one. (How did he test drive it without an ECM) I don't really believe it is bad since I checked the codes before I took it in. Surely if it was bad something would have showed up. Probably have to pay for an ECM now and it still won't be fixed. I am just ready to get it back. I will drive it like it is or sell it.
Mine (4R100) locks up the TC at 35. The OD comes in at 45. I thought I had a five speed. I was told the diesel has more torque and you notice the TC lock up more.
get a chip for it. there many companies that will burn you a custom chip. at one time i was looking at (Motorvation Electronics Corp.) thru summit racing. they seem to be pretty reasonable. I can't tell you what quality of work they do.
I had the exact same problem and I installed a B&M shift improver kit. If your feeling brave, it'll cost you about $60 and a Saturday. That includes the price of parts and fluid. You basicly have to take out your valve body, clean it and install new heaver springs and a run a jumper wire which tells the PCM to increase transmission oil pressure. Not 1 problem since install last year!
I experienced a similar problem. I had my TC go out a about a year and a half ago. I replaced it with a new heavier duty unit and noticed that the tranny had a new vibration that developed immidiately after I put the new TC in. After I finally took it to a trusted transmission shop, I was told simply not to worry. Apparently the original TC had a 3 part lockup assembly in it and the heavier duty TC I installed only has a one part lockup assembly. The tranny guy said that the vibration was coming from the new TC locking up on the valving designed to lock up a 3 part converter. He said it wouldn't harm the transmission, but that if I wanted to get rid of it, I would need to install a shift reprogramming kit. B&M makes some, so does a company called Transgo.
He also said that TC chatter on a totally stock transmission most often is caused by not having the right tranny fluid. Apparently the E4OD takes an additional special friction modifier that does not come in most off the shelf tranny fluids. I personally spoke to two separate individuals that were able to fix the TC shudder simply by doing a full(TC and tranny) fluid change and including the friction modifier when they put the new fluid in.
