Persistent electronic issues - locking/unlocking

Here is the deal I purchased a F350 lariat ultimate edition with the push button start and keyless entry.

Right out of the dealership it had an issue with brakes, first visit to the dealership was at 147kms. Rear right brake caliper was incorrectly installed and I had advanced ware on the pad.

At this time I noted to the dealer that I was having problems locking and unlocking the vehicle with the handles proximity keys. This problem continued but is intermitant which in lies my problem.

I will walk up to my truck and pull the handle to unlock and open. The truck quickly unlocks then locks again. You can see the lock inside the truck pop up and down. It will continue to do this several times over.

It will also do the exact opposite when locking. It will quickly lock then unlock.

At first I was able to over ride this with the keyfob but started to notice the keyfob did not always work either. My remote starter on the other hand has always worked.

I have confirmed both doors do this and both keyfob. It has been in twice for this issue and dealer has basically done nothing. Can anyone else provide feedback? Seen this before?

I have also identified some other electrical bugs like reverse camera will turn on while in drive and stay on some times. Even when I have not put the truck in reverse. Also at one point the screen was not even on while reversing. Took a full minute to reset then come back one.

I also have paint defects on the bed and roof. Yellowish streaks which apparently will require a rather large reprint job. And on top of this the tailgate step refuses to eject. So basically I am pushing for a new truck as they can't fix it. 3 months 3 times in the shop less then 2000kms on her. And loads of days not actually having the truck in my possession.

I think the unlocking relocking may be user error. The inner part of the handle unlocks and the black button locks. You must touch the inner THEN pull or else you get caught in an infinite loop of unlocking and pulling at the same time. Also make sure you aren't touching the black button when trying to unlock.

water can trigger both touch sensor (they go nuts when washing). I would clean both sensors on the front doors to make sure something isn't triggering them (like a stuck key in a keyboard).

I understand the frustration. But it is easy to just demand a whole new truck when the issues can actually be corrected.

A dealer should be able to rectify the locking issue relatively easily. Replace the two front door handle sensors, or the Body ECU which controls them. Maybe check the antennas in the doors. Certainly not worth replacing the entire truck over.

Then on to the camera settings. First, I would reflash the Sync software to the latest version. The only input is "reverse selected" plus the user selected drive to reverse delay.

The paint is the only thing that would irritate me. It could be fixed, but to be factory correct, a very good body shop would need to do the work.

with my truck (also same package as you) if i touch the little rectangle on the door handle it will unlock all 4 door at once. if I touch it a second time it will re-lock all 4 doors. I can see how the truck would not know what to do if it had constant contact with your thumb especially if it is not well planted and just barely touching the pad.

As for the reverse camera I am not sure what is going on. The reverse camera should only come on if you put it in reverse. Now there is a reverse camera delay that is in the setting of your truck. when activated the rear camera will not shut off until you reach a forward speed of 7-10 mph (15KPH). I originally turned off the delay but later discovered the benefit of the delay and I just keep it on now. Find the setting and disable the reverse camera delay.

My wife said it best "these new cars (trucks) today are like one great big iPad" its possible nothing is wrong and we just don't know how to use all the technology these trucks posses.

Good luck getting a new truck.

The locking is not likely a user error as we have owned 2 volvo cars in past 4 years that have the exact same type of system with no issues.

The reinstalling OS, new ECU, and door handles is a solid option. I really get the sense the dealer will not touch something unless they feel can prove to big brother ford that's broken. Instead of standing on their own.

My wife's Volvo goes crazy like that when I'm washing it, with the fob in my pocket. Every time the water stream from the hose hits the handle, it locks and unlocks. The hose nozzle is plastic... Strange how sensitive they can be.

I laugh when the car locks or unlocks when loading a bike on the roof.
