Howdy again,
I have an '87 F150 that i think is suppose to have delay wipers. They don't work. I can turn the switch to the right and get low and hi spd. I can turn the switch to the left and they come on in lo spd but the switch turns for quite a ways and then hits a stop. Do I need to replace my switch or is there some kind of other 'thingy' that controls the delay time?
as always,
thank you for all your help.
Mustang, when you turn your switch to the left, that is your speed control for your delay wipers.
The more you turn it to the left, the longer the delay should be.
OK, so what part isn't working? Going left I only have the one speed all the way to the stop. Is the switch bad or is there something else that controls the delay that needs replacing?
I have an '87 F-150 with delay wipe. If after turning to the left it doesn't come on I'd say your switch is bad. Mine have a pretty good delay when turned all the way left. As far as I know that's the only control for wipers. Hope it helps,
one other thing mine went out after a year or so and had to go to the dealer to get it.
Thanks for your help. My chiltons wiring diagrams shows a delay timer after the switch for the delay wipers. Has anyone had any experience replacing or finding this timer or is it all in the switch, but shown seperate in the wiring diagrams?
My '91 XLT had a problem where it would operate on fast wiper speed only, no slow speed, no inter-mittent, and trying to go into either slow or intermittent mode would cause the wiper arms to just stop, wherever they might be on the windshield. I bought a "windshield speed governor" from my grinning dealership parts man for a mere $50.00 or so, which cured the problem.
This "governor" is a small electronic black box, located behind the dash panel which mounts both headlight and wiper switches.
Cheap tip: the male/female plugs connecting the switch, governor, and motor are made so that the switch can plug directly to the motor, eliminating the intermittent feature, demoting your "XLT" to a "Custom" and/or proving the governor to be at fault.
Thank you,
That would be my problem. I looked last night under the dash and I could not find any box where it should be. I will have to purchase a box. Thank you.
Pull the dash panel that both the headlight and the windshield wiper control ***** are mounted to. The panel is held on by a spring clip; so is the headlight switch ****; the wiper **** is an interference fit. A screwdriver is necessary to remove the ***** and this panel. You HAVE to pull this panel and ***** to get at the governor; if you can get at from underneath, E-Mail me, I'll get you in "Guinness World Records" and make us both rich!
The governor, a black-box-and-bracket assembly, is located by its bracket upwards to the cowl framing by (on my truck) a 5/16" sheet metal screw, toward the left side of the gaping hole covered by panel you've ripped off.
While you're with your Grinning Ford Parts Man, you might consider going ahead and getting a new pair of matched *****; pull-off type ***** have a short and unsatisfactory half-life once they've been removed a time or two, and who knows how long Ford will supply new?
Thank you much Fast Eddie. No Guiness records here! I have not pulled the box yet but I looked up under there tonight. I can see it but will only be able to get to it from the front. Thank you very much you guys are very helpful. I am going to get one this week.
