I am currently rebuilding the 302 that came out of my 89 Bronco. (not that I can ever find time to work on it) Anyway, I have run into a strange problem with my piston rings. The piston appears to be stock. It does have ford markings on it, but know one can seem to identify it. It is the standard 4” bore. The problem is the ring sizes. They are clearly not the normal 3/32 size, I tried a 1/16 which also seems a hair too big. I measure the grove to be .060. The 1/16 rings I got measure .064 in some places. (sealed power made them) The other problem is the oil ring grove is stepped, so the oil ring, even though it fits in the grove, wont compress to fit in the cylinder.

Does anyone know what these pistons might be from, and where I can find rings to fit them? Is there any way I can find out if this is the motor that Ford put in the Bronco originally?
Should be the stock pistons. I went through something similar when I got a 5.0 out of an '88 or '89 Bronco. The rings I wound up with were Federal Mogul, part# 844-E251K from Jegs. -TD

This may sound stupid......but here goes.
Is there any chance that they would be metric? I have a Sealed Power catalog and I think they list some small block pistons that take metric piston rings.....
well, this may be as simple as a metric piston. i can't remember what years it was, but i believe the 5.0 from the mustangs(and could be the trucks and all 5.0's for that matter) had a 4.0 bore and a metric ring package.
after looking at federal moguls website, it lists that the ring size for a 5.0 as two compression rings, 1.5mm or .059 inch, and a 4mm oil ring set, or 0.157 inch. hope this helps

You guys rock! It does look like I have the metric set. I just put in the order for some new ones, so hopefully the proper size part will show up this time. No one that I had talked to around here ever mentioned a metric set. The guy at Jegs thougt those only went into Mustangs. Is it strange that it ended up in a Bronco? or was Ford just using what ever they had on the shelf that day?
Well, I don't know. Your Bronco and my Bronco engine, both with the same ones...I'm sure there are other Broncos that got 'em as well. I know that back in the '60s a lot of the automakers did just slap in whatever they had laying around. The Brits were really bad about that.
I had ordered my rings by size rather than by application, so I never quite got into that. Perhaps it bears research.
The important thing is that we got you fixed up. Don't hesitate to ask if anything else pops up, or put in your 2 cents worth if you can give someone else a hand. Have fun! -TD
