Exclamation Rod Going in PSD?

I have a 1999 Ford F-250 w/ a 7.3 PSD. I bought it used with 92,041 miles on it and she now has 96,176 on her. Last night while idling it started knocking really loud. It almost seems like a rod is going? THe knocking seems to be coming from the "center" of the engine, right in the area of the turbo. THe faster the engine was revved the faster the knocking became. I thought it was bad so I took it to Schmit Ford. While driving it to the dealer the noise seemed to get quieter but you could hear it if you turned off the radio. As I said more then likely a rod is going? Or could it be the turbo?

Thanks,
DC-9

Might be a bad injector. Do a quick search of this forum and you'll see that a bad injector will sould like the motor is coming apart.

Let us know how it turns out.

If the noise is varying like that it's a bad injector no question. Mechanical damage to an engine, the sound never changes, or only gets steadily louder until BOOM. Coming and going like that-injector. And yes it usually sounds like a very loud rod knock. Sometimes it will get bad enough to make you worry about cracking the block.

i looked at your signature and im a little confused. it says 5 speed. do the newer trucks have 5 speed auto's in them ??????????? if not do you mean 6 speed manual? if so it could be your dual mass flywheel too. or the injector just another option too look at!!!

You should have the solid flywheel then, I think.

Instead of a nicely atomized spray pattern there is a big squirt of fuel into the combustion chamber. It all detonates at once.
BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG.

Ok I've been chasing a problem that is similar to yours combined with hard cold starts on Dale Isley's suggestion I went back and started checking electrical connections and the right rear connector was fried at the glow plug point(#7?), just melted away, however it was way worse on the inside harness both gloplug points were melted away(the plugs are still good) all this melting has compromised the injector connections badly I don't think they could be working at all. I'll get the parts here in a couple days and let you guys know. of all the advice i've gotten on this truck no one has ever suggested anything electrical but with an electrically operated engine you should check all the electrical conections first, then proceed.

Btw I don't get the really ugly knock until the engine is warm, and empty at speed it's not too bad, when it's cold it actually purrs very smoothly but with no glo plugs it probably isn't detonating until it's warmed up, use an ohmeter to check your glo plugs and be suspicious of any thing out of the ordinary, it's possible to burn up the inner harness with no sign of damage outside the valve cover, if it is injectors you'll be pulling the cover anyway so don't order your parts till you know for sure.

I took her to the dealer and this is what Schmit Ford found...

The knocking is caused by a warn bushing in my dual-mass flywheel. Funny thing is that they haven't worked on it yet (just order parts) and I picked it up a day later with the knocking gone. I've had it almost a week now and there is no knocking. So I don't know what's up, I just don't want to be throwing parts at it. BTW, injectors looked good.
