I have a 95 F250 PSD 4X4 5speed. I just got the truck used but it seems to have a knock in the engine. This is the first diesel I have owned so I am not sure if this is the case.
Symptoms: When the truck is slowing down in gear and you do not necessarily hear the engine firing I here a knock, knock, knock kind-of like a gas engine when there is a rod knock. I do not here it over the acceleration of the engine as one would expect. The engine has great power (at 190K) so I am wondering if it was rebuilt. It does not blow smoke except a very small amount before the turbo kicks in, under a fair amount of acceleration. I did have to put a new tranny in and it was upgraded to new ford specs (ZF s547). The cluch had been updated to a single mass already. It was a LUK cluch. It also has the exhaust system updated to 4" (from the down pipe?) with a magnaflow muffler. I changed the oil with in 10 miles of buying this truck. Does a rod knock in a diesel sound the same as a gas engine? Thanks for your help in advance.

An injector knock will sound EXACTLY like a bad rod knock. It get's loud enough to scare the wits out of you. Just like a jackhammer if real bad.
Is there a way to find out if it is an injector? if so does it need to be replaced asap?
Thanks for ALL input.
Cookie88 was writing someone else and said that the best way to establish whether it's a bad injector or not is to pull the valve covers off and, one by one, unplug each injector and then reconnect each one. Disconnecting one cylinder at a time untill you find the offending knock. Then replace that injector. Bring your wallet, they are expensive. Get an injector wiring harness while the cover is off, they are known for failing.
Thanks for the input I will post back after I check it out. I also know about the wallet as the tranny was not cheep. I also had the chain and seals in my T/C changed at the same time.
