What part of the emission test did you "almost didn't pass"? Showing the numbers might be a good thing too. The answer to this earlier question may help me/others steer you in the right direction rather than simply speculate. I like to diagnose rather than guess; it's usually cheaper that way .
BTW, and FWIW, the reason I asked about the pipe size earlier was because if the new cat has a smaller pipe size, and thus is more restrictive, then it may be possible to increase the temps of the combustion chambers when you have your foot into it. Such increase in temp is conducive to detonation.

1. Clean your MAF sensor. See thread at the beginning of this forum.
2. How long has it been since you replaced your spark plugs? May wish to take one out and see what they look like.
3. IF your truck has a MAP sensor, test it - again see thread at the beginning of this forum for technical help.
i had the origanl (2)cats replaced with one larger cat, they guy said most people choose to do it this way, plus are newer new air filter, i have not determined if i have a map or a maf yet
ok looked at the tec threads for cleaning the maf... look simple but if i have the maf, the screws are not torx, but just phillips? maybe theyve been replaced? but not by me and i bought it brand new! maybe the 88 2.9 maf has phillps instead? the sensor says ford so i think its factory!
i took some pics of what i think is the maf but it dont look like what you have showed me! how do i post a pic of this? i dont see a browse link? down below it says i may not post attachments? why is that?
ok im lost now! i have the large chilton book for my ranger... it says nothing anywhere about a maf sensor??? maybe i dont have one but thought it was in the airflow tube that comes from the air filter! what i took apart has a blue plastic piece with a slot that fits into something idont think its a maf, as i said my book shows other sensors, but not a maf..........i have pics but i cant post them in the board???
To post attachments you have to be part of ClubFTE.. but you can place image tags.. so when you hit the button and it comes with link or whatever it says, you have to type in a URL.. that's because you have to have it hosted somewhere else.. the best place I know of is mine and my friend's website called antifloppy.com.. just go upload the pic there.
i think the pic works! but this is not the maf right? it has no element like i was told earlier.. then what the heck is it? its right where i was told the maf should be...
