5.8 or 5.0? Can't honestly remember which engine you have.

pingin can come from too low of octane gas, off timing, running hot, and some other things. Is it a all the time thing, or just under load?

Mine does the same thing. At the recommended 10 degrees of advance, it pings under load and can be quite a bear to start when hot. I retarded the timing about 3-4 degrees and all seems better. It has always been hard to time because it doesn't idle as smooth as it should but it's coming up on being 20 years old so I guess it's to be expected.

its not an all the time thing. mostly under loads, uphill etc. i put in a higher grade octane gas (89,was running 87) and it still did it a bit.

yea i noticed my 79 6.6 doin this lately also, only when pulling a hill on the highway, thought it was the fuel so i put some go-fast init and still does it a lil and noticed it runnin a lil hot, topped it off with some antifreeze (alil low), still does it abit so im goin to change the oil and check the timing. very irritating and embarrasing especially comn frm a tight motor

I might add that one time I thought my truck was pinging under load and it turned out to be the rear u-joint. It only made the sound during excelleration. I'm rather embarressed I couldnt tell the differnce. But I would rather be embarissed than chaseing the wrong thing.

Another thing that can cause ping is carbon build-up in your heads. This carbin will get red hot and cause premuture detination on the compression stroke. You may need to do a seafoam clean out. If you do this you will need to change your spark plugs after it is over. for information on this subject just put in seafoam in the search box. This procedure some people believe in strongly and others will say it can ruin your engine. I had it done at a automotive shop and it worked great.

the reason carbon causes ping, is it makes the compresion ratio higher. seafoam usually helps alot, but its known to have clogged cats before, and you ussually need a new o2 sensor afterwards.

Rats, ok... the 5.8 has no knock sensor so you could possibly be dealing with any of the suggestions the folks have already mentioned. You can take the base timing a degree or two further BTDC. It sometimes helps with pinging and mileage. But only do this AFTER a thorough tune up.

No, he means that you should retard the timing a couple degrees. Instead of 10 Degrees BTDC, you would set it at 8 degrees.
