rebuilt 2.9.just replaced original cat.. right afterwords i now hear some pinging, going up hills and inclines that i never hear it ping before? and ideas??
Any chance you damaged or forgot to reconnect any exhaust gas sensors when the cat work was done? I think rxdawg is on the right track here. It sounds like the computer is not getting the right input as a result of the swap.
i took it to a shop! guy said the newer larger single cat will do the same job as the two factory smaller cats he took off!. update! still pinging after disconnecting batt for one hour!!
well dissconnected the batt....... and it still does it! have tryed different gas stations too! it seems to be worse going up hill? is there a knock sensor? maybe its gone bad? almost didnt pass deq!! with 11000 miles on this engine? help!
What emission test did it nearly fail? Has timing been checked (if applicable)? And I'll ask this once again.........Are the inlet/outlet pipes the same size as OEM?
it is the oem aftermarket cat! im thinking the pipe looks the same! timing is at 10 degrees pulled a code 38 today also changed cap and rotor will test drive tomorrow!
Check other sensors. Fresh cat = less backpressure = more air/oxygen in the cylinders.
Check fuel starvation condition causations:
1. old/clogged fuel filters (better to just replace for $5-10 and some cussing)
2. bad O2 sensor (better to just replace for $40-50 and some cussing)
3. dirty injectors (Sea Foam/injector cleaner in gas tank or new injectors)
4. bad sensor somewhere (temp sensor? MAP?)
5. fuel pressure regulator
6. Vacuum leaks (just cussing, plus some new vacuum lines and/or electrical tape)
7. Less backpressure = less EGR flow = pinging. Check EGR valve. Maybe need to clean carbon out of ports.
took it to tune up shop! found one bad code #38 idle somthing? timing was good changed cap and rotor plugs and wires still good! still pings! even more now? should i maybe try premium gas? already payin9 229 a gallon now!!! is there some kind of knock sensor that might be bad? cant find and in the book i have??? o2sensor must be good air/fuel is 14.5!-------- help!

Reason: more info
I don't think premium is a fix, but if you want to spend it, go ahead. All you can really do is put in synthetic fluids now if you haven't already. Also might want to check cooling system and make sure it's all working good.
