Possibly need a little more Octane now that compression is higher due to rebuild?

Was the original cat stopped up? Disconnect the battery cable for 30 minutes to clear the computer. Drive it a while and see if that helps.

Any chance you damaged or forgot to reconnect any exhaust gas sensors when the cat work was done? I think rxdawg is on the right track here. It sounds like the computer is not getting the right input as a result of the swap.

Is this an OEM cat, or an aftermarket, "one size fits all" type of cat? Are the inlet/outlet pipes the same size as OEM?

What emission test did it nearly fail? Has timing been checked (if applicable)? And I'll ask this once again.........Are the inlet/outlet pipes the same size as OEM?

Check other sensors. Fresh cat = less backpressure = more air/oxygen in the cylinders.

Check fuel starvation condition causations:

1. old/clogged fuel filters (better to just replace for $5-10 and some cussing)
2. bad O2 sensor (better to just replace for $40-50 and some cussing)
3. dirty injectors (Sea Foam/injector cleaner in gas tank or new injectors)
4. bad sensor somewhere (temp sensor? MAP?)
5. fuel pressure regulator
6. Vacuum leaks (just cussing, plus some new vacuum lines and/or electrical tape)
7. Less backpressure = less EGR flow = pinging. Check EGR valve. Maybe need to clean carbon out of ports.

What of the 2.9 did you rebuild? Did you happen to do the free-floating lifters? If not, I'd recommend that. It's a common problem in 2.9's.

I don't think premium is a fix, but if you want to spend it, go ahead. All you can really do is put in synthetic fluids now if you haven't already. Also might want to check cooling system and make sure it's all working good.
