Romps

Hi all,
Does any one elses truck get the "romps" after they change the oil? Mine gets them occasionally when I start up for about the first 100 miles after the oil is changed. I only add oil to middle of hatch marks in dipstick, which takes 14 qts of RotellaT 15/40. I notice it with this truck, 03/04 with 23,800 miles and my old 99 with 7.3. after 100 or so miles it goes away. Thanks for any replies. John

Yes I have an 04 with 8000 miles and I get the romps after changing oil. The romps lesson as more miles are put on the truck. I mainly get the romps when I start up in the morning, let idle for 30 seconds and the romps start and blue smoke puffs out the tailpipe. I am going to try Mobile I 5/40 Synthetic oil when I reach 10000 miles, I read many 6.0 people have very good luck with Synthetic oil. It seems to stop the romps completly. After reading many bad reports about having their 6.0 flashed to get rid of the romps I don't think I would chance loosing 14 miles city driving and 19 miles highway. I will try Mobile I 5/40 Synthetic oil first...
Thanks j ford rattler

Wilba504,
I'm glad you wrote this because I have experienced this as well only it happens approx 100 miles after an oil change. I am using Motorcraft 15w-40. It usually happens sitting at a traffic light on a slight grade (up hill) when warmed up and has even quit (although it refires right up and idles fine again). This situation occurs occassionally for another 200-400 miles then all is fine. The oil level is 1/2 way between the marks. I've done three oil changes now and it's done it after each one. It's the only issue I have. I change the oil/filter at 5k mile intervals. I keep thinking it's coincidence that it occurs after oil changes but since you've mentioned it maybe it isn't. I haven't taken it to the dealer as I can't predict when it will happen to show them and there is no CEL. Thoughts?

Yup, these things are a bit picky when it comes to oil level. I talked to my service guy about the bulletin that says not to fill the oil to the top of the dip stick. He says, only go by that if your engine runs rough to begin with. He says, most 6.0's run best when the oil is full.

In my case, I've experamented with a lower level, and got the rough idle. And fill'er her all the way up, to run smooth. So, I fill to the mid hash mark, then test idle. If it's a bit rough, I add a half quart. I don't get the rough idle for the first hundred miles that way. I have two friends doing the same thing. We're all happy after our oil changes now.

Yes the Romps is a rough idle. The Truck runs rough at start up and at stop signs followed by blue smoke out the tailpipe, it will quit when you rev the engine up. I change my own oil/Filter and I put in 13.5 quarts of oil and the dip stick reads mid way between add and full. I dont try 10/30 oil becouse I pull a 26ft travel trailer and the manuel says to use 15/40wt oil when towing. I was told by a Ford Mechanic you could use a Synthetic 5/40wt oil as long as it had the CI-4 rating. He said you get the best of both worlds, the 5wt for start ups and the 40wt for towing. Also no more romps....

Hope you lose your romps.... j Ford Rattler

Supposedly the 10W30 oil is what the factory put in originally.

Good info. I haven't picked up a SD yet (gotta sell the Dodge 1st) but I will save this thread for use when I get the new truck
