I was replacing the shocks yesterday on my 96' E350 Super Club Wagon, and broke a lower front shock stud. The nut twisted off with all but two threads. The new shock is on and being held by a nut clinging to the two remaining threads, with a steel band further holding it in place. I think it is safe at the moment, but I want to get it fixed properly. I was wondering if this is something most shops can handle, or if I should go to the Ford dealer. Any advice would be appreciated. I assume this is a welding job, which is totally beyond my capabilities. I can only break welds. Thanks for your help.
I did the same thing today. I broke the driver's side and found the passenger's side completely broken off. ( 96 E-350 ) Looks to me like they are screwed in then tac welded on the backside. I see an S on the backside. Does that mean stainless? I was hoping for an easy drill out.
The motion of the shock absorber is vertical. the nut/washer keeps it in place. The stud breaking off is not un-common. Most shops heat the nut with a torch to prevent this when removing. Proper fix is to replace the entire radius arm I'm sorry to say (expensive) Maybe you can get a shop to tack weld a washer on the end of the stud?(dmon, was the shock still on the broken stud? In other words it doesn't take much to keep the shock in place? let us know, john)
The shock was was just floating around. I bought a pair of the shock post repair kits. I'm just going to drill out the old post and bolt or weld the new one on.
All the parts stores have them. I bought them at Advance auto for $6.00 each. Motormight 31001 is the part I believe. There in the isle where all the packages that say help are. Good news is the stud that is in the radius arm is not that hard to drill. I just drilled a 1/2 inch hole and ground off what was left of the old post and bolted the new one in. Easiest thing for you 2Fords would be to have someone weld the inside of the nut you have on there to the mount.
