3.0L engines

Was just looking at the Ford web site today and noticed that the 3.0L engines in the Ford Escape and Freestyle show 200 and 205 HP respectively. While the Ranger produces only 148 HP. I see no difference with the little information given other than the 10.0:1 CR on the Escape/Freestyle vs 9.6:1 CR for the ranger. Does anyone know of any-other differences? Also if any of the parts are interchangeable between these 3 engines? Sure would like to "upgrade " my 3.0L to a "SMOG LEGAL" 205 HP.

Thanks guys

The motor in our Ranger's is the 3.0 vulcan, a pushrod engine. The ones in the escape is the 3.0 duratec, which is a overhead cam engine. Two different beasts. My wifes sable had the duratec and it had noticably more power than my Ranger. Hope this helps.

edited to add:

I have done some minor things to my 3.0 to try to boost the power. A cold-air intake (S&B powerstack filter with a 3 1/2" SS intake tube), a underdrive pulley (by DZK). No big improvements in HP just a little better throttle response. They don't call them the 3.slow for nothing

Here some more specs on the DOHC "Duratec" 3.0L engine:

3.0L Duratec Specs

Apparantly Ford tunes the Duratec with different cams and programming, etc. to adjust the power curve in order to better suit a particular application, so you may see some slightly different HP and torque numbers put forth depending on the vehicle (Escape vs. Taurus, for example).

There are no interchangeable parts.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the help. I can always count on the people here at FTE to come up with the information/answers I need.

B.T.W. GWIGG I too have done some things to try to improve performance. K&N FIPK kit, Granatelli mass air flow sensor, flowmaster 40 cat-back, single in, twin out. Netted me better throttle response but it's still a slug. Probably because I've added so much weight to my truck. Bigger wheels/tires, hard tonneau cover, all steel hood must weight 60/75 lbs more than stock. Bottom line is it's about 450/500 lbs heavier now then when I first got it. I had it weighed at a truck stop about 2 months ago it it weighs almost 4100 lbs. with a full tank of gas. So with the 3.0L engine it's never going to be a rocket. Just as well, at my age I'd just get in trouble with to much power anyway. LOL

You might think about getting a Whipple SC...230 flywheel horsepower 260 flywheel torque. Costs about $2500 , but is worth it if you're keeping the truck a long time.

Ford started offering it as an option on the Ranger 3.0 STX this year, so it must be OK.

I HAVE thought about it Richard. Prob. is I have to many other irons in the fire now. Explorer center and overhead consoles, Leather Power buckets. Wing for the tonneau cover, etc, etc, etc. At this point in my life, (I'm 67) the power just isn't as important to me as it was 45 years ago. I want it to LOOK GOOD first. I'll get around to the engine eventually, but there's no rush. Like I keep telling my son. If I live long enough, he's going to inherit a $250,000.00 Ranger. LOL... Take a look at my Gallery to see what I've done so far.

Memphis, I hope I'm as cool as you are when I'm in my 60's. Your truck looks outstanding! I really like the hood, can you give me some info on the hood? (price, where to get and ect.)

Thanks! -gwigg

GWIGG, Thanks for the compliment. I've lived in So. Calif. for 6 years now and no one has ever called me "DUDE." So I guess "COOL " is as close as I will ever come. Thanks.

The hood is a "Reflexxion "Domination" Series Steel Cowl Hood." They weigh a ton, probably 40-45 lbs. more then stock. So if you're concerned about 0 to 60 and 1/4 mile times, you would definitely be better off with a "glass" hood. I just like the way it looks.

You can get the hood at stylinconcepts.com. They are a bit pricey though at $450.00 plus S&H. Because of it's size and weight the S&H is about $150.00, so total cost would be about $600.00.

Like you I've had a number of people ask me about the hood. I got lucky and found mine on Ebay about 15-16 months ago. They were being sold bay a small speed shop in Phoenix, AZ at the time. I think I paid $325.00 for it. I've looked several times since then just to see if any more show up. But no luck. Good Luck.

Nick, Saw your mods, and you have been working on it. Nice truck...
What programmer are you using, and if it is, how do you like it?

Also, have you thought about putting an Explorer climate control in your Ranger? I've read it's works real good.

Am I understanding this right? Ford is offering a supercharged 3.0L in the '05 Ranger STX?

Ritchard, The programmer is a "SuperChipsCustom" hand-held, I didn't want a chip. I believe they are a subsidiary of SuperChips. It plugs into the diagnostic port on your truck. It comes with 3 pre-programed settings. The seller will program whatever you ask for, within reason. I had mine done for 87, 91 & 93 octane. Only takes a few minutes to reprogram the truck now. I have a total of 4 settings. Stock, 87, 91 & 93, Three in the programmer and one in the truck, and I go back and forth as I please . I think you can also get a cable for it that will let you connect the hand-held to your computer. That way you can "download" changes instead of having to send the handheld back to the company. I didn't get that because I'm not computer savvy enough to do stuff like that. I purchased the programmer from a speed shop in Georgia. (They advertise right here on FTE. Name is Motor-Haven. Nice folks, give them a call.)

As for how do I like it? Well I do get better throttle response and somewhat better acceleration (seat of the pants gage) but let's face it, we're talking about a 4,000 lb. 3.0L automatic. So it's never going to be a rocket. If you're interested I'll dig out the bill and get you the address of the speed shop.

No, not thinking about Explorer Climate control. Not yet anyway.

They are an independent company that licensed the name from Superchips. Superchips once held a stake in them, they no longer do. The company name is now simply "SCT".
