You will need to shorten your driveline, adapt a shifter to your liking, and depending on the year of the T10 or Toploader, you may need to change the bellhousing/trans bolt holes. The tranny mount is different also and it is further back than the T18. The crossmamber will slide back in the frame and then drill new holes to bolt it in place.
I have a Toploader in my '66, before that I had a T10.
The Toploader is a stronger tranny, but as long as you don't abuse it the T10 is very durable AND it has new parts available. You can even get an aluminum case T10 brand new, so it depends on usage. I used the T10 for about 100K miles and a lot of that was towing a horse trailer(about 8-9K lbs. loaded). It was in need of replacement after that!! Neither of those tranny's is designed for heavy load(weight), long term pulling like I did, so in a way I guess you could say it lasted very well.
There are pictures in my gallery of my trans setup, let me know if you need some detail shots of mounts, etc. and I'll see what I can get.
Yes there is, in both places. The spline is probably adaptable(just get the proper diameter and spline count), but the bellhousing register and bolt pattern are both different.
Yes there are some numbers to look for. There is a small tag fastened to a rivet on the front, passenger side of the case. The tag is about 3/4" x 2" and will have a letter code like HEH-C. All of the Ford Top Loaders were made for Ford engines(I should have mentioned that), so if it is a Top Loader it will have the correct register altho it might have a different bellhousing bolt pattern and a diff length input shaft. Both of those diffs can be corrected.
The T10 will also have the small tag, I think in the same area. It will be like the Top Loader or a Ford number like C3AA-D, the letter code will be HEK-?(letter).
